Snap ring pliers necessary?

I'm just about to rebuild the master cylinder on my CB-1 as it's got a bit of a leak and I want to sell it shortly.

I need to remove and then replace a snap ring but don't have the necessary tool; am I likely to be able to do it without proper snap ring pliers or bodge something to do this?

I'm not that keen on buying a reasonably pricey tool I've got away without needing for the last 14 years Embarassed Previously I've just popped these thigns off with screwdrivers but that's normally when I don't need to replace them.

What about grinding the ends of cheap set of pliers to a point? It would mean pulling the handles apart rather than together but better than a screwdriver

Hein Gericke do a decent set of German made circlip pliers for about £7. They come with a way of changing them from internal to external mode, and with three angled sets of jaws.

Once you've got a set you'll wonder why you arsed around with screwdrivers for your entire life. They really are useful to have.

I have had snap rings/circlips on/off without them several times without causing damage.

I used two small allen keys and a pair of pliers or just lever them off with a screw driver.

TBH though they are quite useful tools and not really that pricey, can get a reasonable set for £10-15. Just don't get the ones with interchangeable heads as they generally suck donkey doo doo.

I can get a set with the interchangeable heads for £8 in my local tool shop which is cheaper than I thought so I may just go with them assuming they're made of at least tin can quality monkey metal. Guess they don't work that hard so they don't need to be amazing quality.

SORT of agree.... but there is the inverse law of sod.... principle that says if you have only ONE 3mm pilot drill... it will snap soon as you touch metal with it. Have TWO to cover such eventuality, and first will snap first touch, second will shear in the hole, just to teach you for being cocky. Have THREE, and the first will snap at first touch, second will shear in the hole..... with trepidation, you'll continue, drilling all but ONE hole, you need, without problem, and then, when the shops are shut, last bit will shear in the hole ONE before last! Have FIVE, well, run the perms, Sod will tease you however suits to similar ends.... buy TWENTY drill bits, SURE he cant snap ALL of them, and you are 'safe'..... you'll drill every fucking hole, first time, with the FIRST drill bit... JUST to make you feel an idiot, and make you wonder WHY you needed to buy 20, and have you cursing Sod, for the fact you did! Either way, he gets the last laugh!

Circlip pliers? Always annoying, and I have invested in a couple of different pairs, and they have made me wonder why I struggled without them a few tiimes; but then 'sod' has jumped in, and when I have thought "Ha! circlip pliers, got that covered' gone to the draw and of course, pin size too big, or reach too small, or whatever!

Out with the grinder, trying to reshape plier noses, or grinding down nails and stuff!

Doing Snowie's master cylinder, main problem was that the clip wasn't actually a propper circlip, it was a simple spring clip, and even if it had been a circlip, couldn't have got 'in' at it past the end of the piston....

So... probably no big deal not having circlip pliers, you still only have 50/50 chance they'd be useful...... BUT, better a 50/50 chance than no chance!
