Not much of one but in July I will be working in London for a few days. While there I will have most of a weekend to myself and would like to visit the Natural History Museum and possibly other stuff.

To keep costs down I've been told to chose a Premier Inn. I know nothing of locations in London so I'm looking for advice in which to choose that is close enough to a tube station to get me to the museum and is within walking distance of other stuff to keep me occupied for a few hours without being a too much of a struggle to get to Teddington in the morning.

Two I have at the moment are Kew and Putney Bridge.

Didn't even know one existed Confused TBH, nothing compared to the one that they closed in Birmingham, happy days.

Catch the train to London, stopping at Rejection, Disappointment, Backstabbing Central and Shattered Dreams Parkway.

If you really want to keep costs down, some uni halls of residence are rented out to the public during their summer holidays.
I've used this before and it seemed a decent enough option.

Paid for by work. I think the limit is about £120 a night.

The Science museun in London is ten times better than the one in Birmingham, and I haven't even heard of that one. It is fantastic, but going alone you may look like a pedo.

The natural history museum is Ok, however you don't havr much interaction, thus if you want to be occupied, then it is the Science one to go to!

Both have naughty kids!

I am not sure on parking if i am honest though!

Best bet is to try hotel booking websites on deals. Some have offers that are fairly random.

Thats the trouble these days. If you want to piss about with the gadgets, have a bit of fun and sod being an adult you get odd looks and security hanging around to make sure you don't abduct a child

I was in Portugal and me and mate were having the best time in the pool with some inflatables we bought, doing the water slide standing up etc. The looks we were getting were priceless. Sod getting old, nearly 40, fat and balding. Don't mean you cant have fun.

I think people are more aware than the past, or care more. It is right to be suspicious, there are men who do perve and try to touch up kids. I would rather be safe than sorry.

However yes, enjoy yourselves!

"I've got 7 kids with ADHD... what shall i do with them? I know! i'll take them tot he natural history museum."

Also go see HMS belfast, Buckingham palace, houses of parliament etc etc
Basically as long as they are all in zone 1 or 2 on the tube you can go round them all day and it won't cost more than a fiver.

Son, i am disappoint.

You realise they are next to each other, that the science museum pretty much grew out of the Natural history Museum and there used to be an internal door between them?

You beat me to it. More politely.

@Minh Dinh - Of course you haven't heard of a science museum in Birmingham. You live in London, I'm actually quite impressed you can spell "Birmingham" correctly given that it falls outside the M25 Wink

Most of the posts in this thread have turned to talking about trying to avoid looking like a pedo. Laughing

I have barely left Hackney let alone London lol!

However I am not lying that it is a very awesome museum. Then again it was the only subject I liked at the time and I was pretty good at it.

If you like mechanics, and being involved with what you are looking at rather than just staring, it is bloody awesome. They also had a type of internal space ride thing years ago too. Smile

Marki, want to meet up perhaps? I am a little weird but you'll get use to me.

I heard the London aquarium is crap.

I guess too many people have met me now. Shifty

So to summerise. I should doss at a college within zone 1&2 where I'm likely to be mugged and I shouldn't offer sweets to random children who will be swarming around screaming their heads off in a museum I didn't want to go to?

Good old BCF. Laughing

Putney bridge it is then.

You have £120 a night. Should be able to afford more than a cardboard box under Putney Bridge.

All the best

Boris bikes FTW.

Sod the tube - too crowded & you don't get to see anything.

Boris's rent-a-bike scheme is pure genius.

The biggest risk of injury in london isn't being happy slapped, mugged or shot or whatever, it's getting knocked off a bicycle. South kensington tube station has an underground passage to the natural history, V&A, Science museum. Also in that area is harrods, hyde park, albert hall, albert memorial. There is also london zoo, national gallery, the tate galleries, london bridge, tower bridge, the tower of london, big ben, london eye, imperial war museum, st pauls, westminster abbey, trafalgar square, etc etc.
They're all in Zone 1&2. You buy an oyster card for £5 with £2 credit on it and top it up at the machines. Trips in zone 1 cost about 1.80, but once you reach the 5-6 quid cap it stops charging you. That cap is the same price as an all day travel card for zone 1 + 2. So if you go to zone 3 at all, it then moves the cap up to a zone 1-4 travel card which is like a tenner.

As said the two museums are right next door to each other. It's all gridlock central right now as they are doing extensive works in and around the nat history and the roads are all half shut. Only parking I know of is very close, in Holy Trinity Brompton.
