The government is currently soliciting rants about unnecessary red tape in the transport sector. Licensing, registration, insurance, roads, vehicle safety and standards, whatever you want to have a go about, fill your boots.

I'd just note that in terms of licensing, we're currently committed to the 3rd Directive, with our implementation overdue, so there's little point in suggesting anything substantive there.

What they're (claiming to be) looking for is things that are simply unnecessary. Personally I think mandatory SORN for unlicensed vehicles falls squarely in that category, and will be representing as such.

Oh boy!

I think I'll wait until later, I'm gonna need a bit of a run up at this one.

Bloody hell, I'll get RSI!

SORN in general, the fine for being taxed but not insured, VED which means:

My car pumps out 1113KG Co2 a year (174g Co2 per KM @ 4000 miles a year) and I pay £200 a year road tax
Girlfriend's car pumps out 1288KG Co2 a year (115g Co2 per KM @ 7000 miles a year) and pays £30.

Reminder: this ends on Friday.

Amusingly, half of the responses seem to be about bringing in more regulation and legislation, rather than cutting it. A nation of nascent Park Keepers, that's what we are.

I was on the receiving end of the 'your freedom' (remember that?) website back in 2010.

If it's any consolation, some poor bugger will be reading all your responses. Don't expect anyone to suddenly sit bolt upright and shout "By god, they're right! Hemmings, dismantle the SORN system and sack everyone in Cardiff!", but, if it's anything like the "your freedom" exercise it will inform policy to a lesser or greater extent.

It will be full of mentals, though. Proper, crazy mentals with lizards on the mind. And the uninformed. And bigots. And anyone who thinks that writing to a government address will GET THEIR PROBLEM FIXED. NOW! I PAY YOUR WAGES, DAMMIT, YOUR WAGES!

Although, funnily enough, they never wanted to sign my timesheet or discuss leave...

...

MOTORCYCLES
21% of fatalities are bikers, yet bikers only make up 1% of the road users.

Proficient use of a motorcycle arguably requires a higher skill level than a four-wheeled automotive. Motorcycles (including mopeds) offer significantly less protection to the operator than is afforded in the most basic of cars.

Insurance statistics show that road users take more risks the younger and less experienced they are. Juxtaposed with existing regulation that allows 16 year-olds access to mopeds. There is little tolerance for mistakes involving motorcycles which often result in permanent injury or fatalities. The inherently safer nature of a car provides some forgiveness to the operator in an accident. Instead a motorcycle use should be restricted to more mature audience, such as a minimum age and experience (e.g. 21 and four years) driving a four-wheeled vehicle. Unlike cars and vans, there is little commercial need for motorcycle qualifications for the purpose of employment, a change in these regulation should have a minimal impact on users.

There is, but there are a few valid points.

There's plenty of "UGHH. GET RID OF THIS. UGHH" and knuckle dragging neanderthals.
