I thought it was too good to be true...and so it's now proved. They are offering Copper policy only from now on if the vehicle is more than 16 years old. Copper has a £40 excess charge and local recovery only. ie fucking useless.

Anyone know of another breakdown company that will cover ancient relics but not be as expensive as RAC or AA? IC were only £29 a year - much cheaper than anywhere else I could find.

I find it cheaper owning a newer bike Laughing

Does your insurance policy not offer breakdown crap? I ended up paying £8 a year for breakdown cover on the RS125, used 4 times in a month Laughing

My insurance offers me precisely bugger all except basic third party only cover Laughing I will pay whatever the AA or RAC want (within reason) if I have to. But it was nice to get cover for less money, even if it was only for one year.

The chances of me actually needing to call out recovery is negligible. It's nearly 20 years since I was last dumped out and even then managed to get home without breakdown assistance. But I like to know it's there for an emergency.

Try autoaid.

It's breakdown insurance, as far as I am aware there is no restriction on the age of your vehicle but obviously check first.

EDIT: a few more details. I have been with them for a while, used them once after a spill andnthey sent someone out quickly. Basically you pay the recovery/repair guy and they pay you back. Pay back took a few days but there were no problems.

They are the only "insurance" company that corresponds with customers in a polite manner too if that is anything to go by.

£38 a year covers you and your spouse in any vehicle but I think they do cheaper cover too.

Just had a look at their site. Apparently you have to pay all the costs of recovery and then they reimburse you.

I've been with them for 2 years and always find them polite, easy to deal with etc although I've never had to call them out personally.....damn home servicing (touches wood quickly).

TCB is the bolloc*s and i've nevr had an issue.£71 for a top end policy for 2 is a bargain.

Gave IC a bell - the Copper level is totally fucking nonsense. £19 for a year. Sounds good. Except you then have to give them £40 if you call them out. And you can only be recovered if you're less than £15 miles from home. What the monkey's arse use is that to anyone?

For a tenner more (£69) I can be covered on/in any vehicle and can be recovered, no quibble, from any part of the UK. So be it.

Many thanks for the suggestions. I'll check out those mentioned and have a search round myself before coming to the inevitable conclusion that you're as well sticking with either the RAC or AA Laughing

They offer excellent value if you like sitting by the side of the road with your broken bike Wink.

I'd at least go for green flag, who will send you a contractor's flat-bed straight away.

Ouch. I presume you're registering with an old bike, rather than having a newer one with 'any vehicle' cover.

Their personal cover costs about that. But they do 2 for 1 so you can split it with a friend.

Tis about the bog standard price for personal cover, it seems.

Can get personal cover with AA and RAC for £74. Like I say, you always end up back with one of the big two. I had personal cover with the RAC for years. I was down to about £55 when I left to move to IC. Should have stayed where I was - it'll end up being false economy moving, for sure.

Eh? I'm sure my top level[1] cover for me and the missues, any vehicles[2], was less than that with Green Flag. Maybe it's shot up since my renewal - I did compare against AA and RAC at the time, and they were still the cheapest for the level of cover that I wanted.

I've never had to use it yet, mind.

[1] Rescue, recovery, home start, journey continuation, accommodation, everything except for European cover.
[2] "Vehicle" does explicitly cover motorcycles, I checked that very carefully, and (IIRC) up to 30 years old.

My problem is I like (and tend to own on a regular basis) old bikes. I can't see why they have exclusions based on age if you're not forever calling them out. Surely, as with insurance, it should be at least partly based on the number of claims made.

But you actually have to have the money to pay them before claiming back. So you need to have a spare £100-£200 lying around just in case you breakdown

I believe ADAC personal cover includes motorbikes (you'll have to check.)
It's something like £79 euros for europe wide cover.
However they are a German company, which means it's a bit more hassle. And they use the AA in the UK.

+1 to AutoAid. They do pay out, in a timely fashion (i believe they quote 10 days). They also cover pretty much everything, including accidents (unlike AA).

I pay for recovery by credit card, and then pop the claim in and the money's back well before i have to pay the following month.

Means that i'm not stuck to relying on just one company to fullfil it's part of the bargain, whilst i'm stuck at the side of the road.

some banks offer recovery with their accounts, i get free recovery within 20 miles of my home address in any vehicle im using so covers all my bikes and my car which is handy. although it is a tad bit expensive as i get charged around £12 a month for my account (get loads of other stuff chucked in too) but might be worth checking what your bank might offer.

They do, and are very good, but in the UK they use the AA. Sad

I had Green Flag some years ago with the gold cover which I confirmed before leaving for the Swiss Alps, coming back through france my 999 decided it didn't want to play in the rain and the alarm locked out, made the call to Green Flag who then told me I DID NOT have cover. I got my brother to come and pick me up with his pick up only to be told the next day that(some p+++) I did and as far as they could see that I had Gold cover and couldn't work out what went wrong. What went wrong was they are a pack of thieving idiot's that I will never use or recommend, oh and they reimburse my anual fee. What a result that was as I had to pay for my brothers crossing on the train(euro tunnel) and fill his pick up with derv ext, ext. Please don't trust G F, I now use AA or RAC if I don't get cover with my insurance company, good hunting Laughing
