Just looking for a quick answer.

Is it ok and legal to use logos and images of stuff on your own website from other companies?

For example a 'Ford' website, which is obviously going to be a website about the car firm. Are you allowed to put a big FORD logo on the website without fear of Ford taking legal action?

How do you know what is copywritten, etc, so you dont get into shit for making a simple mistake?

I really doubt it, I imagine they could still do you for it.

Copywrite law is a bitch. I get pounded about it at Uni by our lectures telling us to take our own pictures (I know not logos, however I doubt the law differentiates alot) because if we use someone else's, its not uncommon for them to demand any amount of money for stealing their imagine. If they do, you virtually have no leg to stand on.

I suppose you could e-mail Ford and ask for their permission, I would of thought an e-mail back granting you access would be sufficient.

Question

Just don't risk it, always make sure you have permission.

A mate has a garage 'harris on ford'

Ford trained, worked in dealership for years, set up on his own over 7/8 years ago specialising in fords using ford only parts and ford have now started jumping all over him because of it.

He's now 'harris on 4D' Rolling Eyes cost him a wedge

On the subject. This ebay ad below is using photo's I took, feel like emailing him to say gtfo and use your own

Legally, no, generally not.

Whether they're actually likely to give a shit or not is another matter.

Try reading the terms and conditions on the website of the thing you want (eg the Ford site) - it'll probably have more info on use of trademarks and images and such.

It has a lot to do with whether you are seen to be making money from it or not. Idea

If you are just using their logo on a website that is seen to be promoting them, or perhaps you've done some work for them and are using their logo to show who you've worked for, then it's usually fine.

If however, you are using it to make money for yourself, then you need to ask permission to use the logo. It's likely they would want a percentage from you, or it will be a flat no.

I assumed that would be the answer...

However....

What would happen if I took a picture of a Ford car with the Logo clearly on the front of it ?

Then I would ultimately own the copyright to the photograph and therefore should be allowed to use it wherever I want - including on a website.

Technically yes, you should be able to use it without an issue...at the end of the day by having your photo of a Ford car on your website, you are promoting their product. Thumbs Up

It really does depend on the context of the promotion.

Ford can be quite hot on this (as Marmalade's mate found out) because they are one of the few that operate a network of non franchised, but approved, service centres.

For this reason, they don't want any Tom, Dick or Harry setting themselves up as Ford specialists, or not to the extent where they use things like logos as part of their promotional material; I've even known Ford owners clubs fall foul of this policy.

There is a limit to what they can copyright, but I don't know how far that extends; an old favourite used to be to use the blue oval, but with the Ford script in a completely different font, but I don't know how legal that is.

ford are a pain in the arse regarding this kind of thing.

i remember the olden days of modding cars and you could get various branded things for most makes, beside Ford as they sued everyone who used their logos

Nothing has changed.

There are a couple of Ford specialist magazines (Classic Ford, Fast Ford) that don't use the logo anywhere in their marketing; I imagine that, despite the fact that these mags promote everything good about the company, Ford would charge them an exorbitant fee to feature the logo, if they allowed them to at all.

Could he have blurred them on purpose?

If he has, he has a choice of claiming they aren't yours, or that he's deliberately done himself a disservice, by making his business look worse than it is.

Either way, is it worth the aggro?

Don't think he'd win an argument there's not a lot of claiming it isn't this pic.
Just annoying that I bother to take pics when i'm working and they can't be arsed and steal other peoples.

They were taken at a show day at Croft

OK? Maybe.

Legal? Probably not.

The "maybe" entirely depends on the profile of your site, your use of the trade mark, and whether it's worth their while to deploy a vampire-assassin to eat your liver.

If you want a better answer, give us more information, or pay a lawyer to give you the answer I've just given, only with more caveats and disclaimers.
