Hi,

Had an issue at my last track day, the rear tyre was burring up quite badly down the centre.

There was an over-revving (loads of revs and a loss of drive) down the straights (snetterton) at high revs which felt to me like clutch slip, but this doesn't add-up looking at the rear tyre.

I had a brain-wave and thought this might actually be the rim spinning slightly inside the tyre Rolling Eyes . I felt nothing in terms of movement or loss of traction....

Bike is a thou. To be fair i changed the tyres manually myself with just soapy water..... Could this be the reason?

Anyone experienced the same?? Any advice welcome!! thanks! Smile

It could be that the tyre is old and past it sell by date, and therefore lost some grip. Or that the track temp was low and you were just giving it more stick than the tyre could cope with?

If the tyre is burring up in the centre that would suggest it was spinning up, not turning on the rim. Can that even happen with tubeless sportsbike tyres? Only seen it on off road bikes...

I believe it can happen; a magazine tested the maxxis sport tyres on a GSXR 1000 and found that they spun on the rim but not by much.

if the centre of the tyre looks like it has been spinning up, then it has probably been spinning up!!

Problem = crap tyre and lots of HP!!

Solution = less beans or better tyre Smile

If you want to prove it just get some wipeboard marker draw a couple of lines around the rim between rim and tyre and take it out for a ride to try and get the same effect happening again to see if the marks move? To me though it sounds like your wheels just spinning up because as long as the bead pressed against your rim hard when you pumped it up there shouldnt be a problem

Brave man.
But I see your problem there Wink.

Could the tyre have been overheating maybe?

Can happen yes, if it spins enough it'll put the wheel out of balance, and the resulting vibration should give it away.

Can always mark a line on your rim and tyre to easily tell.

Personally from what you're saying it would appear to be spinning up rather than spinning on the rim.

what pressure was it at?

i've never heard of a wheel spinning in the rim except from racers running VERY low psi.

I'm not worried about the tyre really, I'm just concerned about whether or not i need to do anything with my clutch before the next t-day.

I felt no vibration or anything while on the bike just the over-revving/lack of drive....

Fair to say I'm not opting for another Avon just yet Wink ...

no expert on bikes , but test it simply draw a line with tip x on the wheel and on the tire when you do a few laps the line shud still be level if not you found your problem seriously doubt it would be that though Neutral

Could of blue'd your clutch plates up. Stick front wheel up against a wall select a gear hold onto front brake rev engine a touch let clutch out slowly. Providing your rear wheel doesn't spin engine revs should drop long before anything else happens. If anything whip the clutch cover off and the clutch plates out and just inspect them for any blue overheating marks or any damage.
