Hellooo,

My insurance is up on my Bandit in the next few days which i've owned for 1 1/2 years.

I want to sell it and buy something like a CBR 600 F which I really like.
My mate has one which i've ridden and I like it, really I want something more sporty with fairing, but which is also an older model so I can do maintenance stuff on it fairly easily.

Also would need to be similar in terms of the bike (Group 12) as the insurance rockets up after this.

So what other bikes are there similar to this bike? Around 1999-2000 with £2000 budget. Only one I know of is the Thundercat.
And anyone own a CBR 600 F with any comments?

Cheers! Mr. Green Karma

ZX6R as well.

I think the CBR600F is the best buy of those three. Thumbs Up

Aside from reg/rec and CCTs being iffy they're great bikes.

I've had a 600 F and couldn't fault it! Also look at the F sport.

If I were looking for a bike on a 2k budget now id prob go for a k1/k2 gsxr though that might be higher on insurance for you.

Yeah the GSXR's are coming out on the insurance way too high. The Kwak is even coming out £200 more.

Looks like the Honda is the best bet for now!

I really miss my cbr600f 1995. Cracking bike. You can get a decent one for under 2 grand, i bought mine for 950.

Zx6r felt " punchier " but not as comfy.

Also, if you are over 25, the bike is over 15yrs and you have a garage you can get cheap classic insurance.

£555 deal of the day, whatever that is.

£656 otherwise!

Quotes for the CBR are £421 benchmark.

Why, are you selling up?

Cbr600 ! F4i model onwards. Fuel injection is worth it.

I looked at a few this week.

I get the impression that for most things, bikes lag 10-15 years behind cars. so a 1995 CBR600 is still at 1980's fiesta level of reliablility. With cars, 1993-1998 was the sweet spot. Some very nice cars, before H&S took off and the dashboard became 2 meters deep. Only thing missing is OBD2..... I had a 1995 fiesta, 1992 saab, 1999 laguna. perfect, but dont go any older!

got my CBR600 friday. 2003 model and similar budget, 28,500 miles and well looked after. Keep looking!

Important thing - bikes are also toys for the rich. They only use them in summer, in the dry and maintain them *immaculately*. Look for one of these Smile

but like you said, Im scared to look under the fairings incase I scratch it. I will be doing it myself, but I need to teach myself to be very careful around her Smile

Neutral Im pretty sure I could run a 1995 CBR with fuck all servicing for a much longer time than a 1980s fiesta...

Yeah was looking at the FI bikes, thing is there is a price hike once that happens, and I am so used to dismantling carbs I would be more familiar with a carbed bike.

Also funnily enough I think I prefer the look of the 1999-2000 model with the single headlight.

And cheers Paddy, yeah I'm in Faversham so may well take you up on that in the summer Thumbs Up

Although the Bandit insurance runs out on Tuesday and i'm considering selling it and not bothering renewing so I can get a CBR/Similar when a tidy one comes up Smile

Thats a strange theory.

Lol difficult to tell with this monsoon of late!

What I mean is, without my Bandit I will have a lack of transport to get there, so it would have to wait until I have my new bike Razz

CBR600f has to rate as one of the top 3 bikes I've owned. Ultra reliable as long as its been serviced by capable people, rides like its on rails, and has more than enough power. I sold my FY (2000) for 2.2k with 17k on the clock. Should be easy enough to find for £1500 > £1800 in average condition. Well worth owning one for the experience even if you don't keep it. Great commuter and a superb track bike. Self maintenance is possible but just make sure you give yourself enough time, access to some areas is limited.

If your ever in the area Paddy 'gis a shout Thumbs Up Although it won't be swaying my decision too much, my budget doesn't quite stretch to a GSXR 750 and I would like to arrive at work in the mornings in one piece Razz

Another question though, is it actually worth getting a CBR, or just keeping the Bandit another year. Insurance for the Bandit will be £166, so i'll be paying £250 more insurance + about another £600 for the bike itself...

...or is life too short to worry about that? I'm just getting a bit bored of the Bandit.

that is a lot extra on insurance. I think you can get it down a bit.

my quote, with less than ideal car and 0 bike history is £300 fully comp. fucking awesome

Often, theres one insurer that is far cheaper than any other who your probably with, that doesnt quote well on comparisons.

The only way is to phone up to the best of your bullshitting ability and try and get it changed for nearly free, and you will be there *most* loyal customer and the phone rep will get his customer retention bonus points Very Happy

It helps imo to play own the 10000 extra horses you will be looning around on - dont tell them you are bored

Why do you say this out of interest? I've had a carbed one but was looking at the FI models recently. From what I read they seem to do less well on fuel than the earlier ones surprisingly but do they have other advantages?

The FI bikes over here (i.e. not america) aren't called f4i, they are F1-F6 and FS1-FS2 (sport) Thumbs Up .

There were a few changes when they got FI.

Wheels are different (much lighter too), clutches are different, slightly more power and better response due to FI, brakes are lighter, there are slight frame changes to increase rigidity, slightly shorter wheelbase and better aerodynamics, there are a few changes in the head too that offer better oil flow and I think a tad higher rev ceiling. The only downside of the PGM FI is that it is a bit twitchy at very low RPM, if it bugged you enough then a second hand PCIII would sort it. On my commute I average 45mpg, that is a mix of town riding, motorways and A roads.. Other issues are noisy CCTs (not a mechanical problem just annoying), weak speed sensors, weak reg/rec and mild steel downpipes.

There was also an F sport introduced at this time which is lighter again (no centre stand for example) has a split seat, slightly higher redline due to double valve springs on the exhaust, extra clutch plate and a few other small changes to better it's tuning potential.

If you are considering getting one I highly recommend them, they are fantastic road bikes; plenty of power, nice riding position, easy availability of parts, great handling (fully adjustable suspension), reliable etc etc etc. I have the standard F1 and my brother had the FS1, both are brilliant but given the choice I'd still go for the F1 because it has a centre stand, comfier seat, grab rail, more underseat storage and is cheaper to buy.

EDIT: I paid £2k for mine with 16k on it 2 years ago, prices seem higher than that now, should still find either a late carb'd or early FI model for £2k though.

I also wanted the factory standard immobiliser, looked at a datatool system3 bike and bloody hell it was annoying!!!!!

Maybe Im wrong on carbs, but Im scared to adjust my cg125 carb, and these 600's I looked at ran quite poorly - wouldnt stay idleing, died many times.

Do the 99-00 bikes come with the HISS Immobiliser system as standard?

Would knock my insurance down £20 if it did.
