I couldn't see anything like this so I thought I'd start a thread where people can recommend Mechanics they have used for their Bikes.

I'll start with Russel Motors by Clapham Junction:

https://maps.google.co.uk/maps/place?q=russell+motors&hl=en&cid=13313581937532277249

They came highly recommended to me by a guy I work with who uses them all the time.

I've been in once before, but I went in again this morning because I thought I needed a new chain and sprocket for my bike because the chain was really loose and it had been tightened not that long ago. I expected to be told to come back in a couple of days to have them fitted.

They recognised me immediately and asked what I needed. Even though it was 9am and he was in the middle of working on another bike he took the time to look at my bike straight away.

He told me that although it was getting to the point I needed a new set (and showed me exactly how to tell, by how loose the chain was on the sprocket) he thought I'd probably get another thousand miles out of it before it needed a change.

Then he offered to tighten the chain and grease it while I had a cuppa at the cafe round the corner, and told me to keep an eye on it according to how he'd shown me and give him a ring when I thought it was ready and he'd order in a set for me and fit it at my convenience.

I went back to get it and asked him how much he wanted, and he shrugged and said a fiver.

I gave him a tenner, Great guys, great service.

So lets hear other peoples recommendations for those of us that don't do all our maintenance ourselves!

Not sure whether this should be in the Workshop Section....Anyways
I use this bloke for my MOTs

Based in Bollington Cheshire.

Not had to use a mechanic...yet as Malc is a mine of information on anything Italian and is willing to impart...Honest bloke, as is Jason the other mechanic.

A tenner for tightening a chain? Man im gonna change jobs, i could do chains all day!

Seriously though.....you really should be learning to do this kind of thing yourself. Its easy to learn and in my experience, you will do a more accurate job than most garages because you care that bit more.

For what its worth, im in Poole and for things i cant do myself i use spanners in Wallisdown. Very fair prices, and no job is too small.

Aye, fair enough, but he did only ask for a fiver and I did turn up to tell him i thought I needed a new chain and sprocket and he showed me exactly how to tell that I had another thousand or so miles on it.

Makes a change for them not to just say 'Oh yes mate, definately needs a new one leave it with us'

My boss took his vespa into a place in fulham because the exhaust was blowing and they phoned him up to tell him that the rear tyre was below the legal tread limit. When he pointed out he'd only done 800 miles on the tyre since they fitted it the stupid bint on the phone told him 'It depends on how you ride, and it's a good thing it's worn down quickly it shows it is doing a good job'

Even I know you should get more out of a vespa tyre than 800 miles ... unfortunately he'd paid for it before he told me.

Rob's fantastic and the only person other than myself and one friend I'd let work on my bike. Once he knows you he is a very handy chap to know if you're a biker.

He also instructs at Ron Haslam Superbike School, so he knows a thing or two about riding as well as spannering! Smile

GRIZZLEYS MOT - 30 WEST PARADE, HALIFAX, HX1 2TE

Just used them for MOT's. They are very old school, a grubby little back street place. No fancy equipment or anything and i wouldn't want them to work on my bike (just from appearances of the place, they might be excellent), but if you need an MOT they are VERY lenient and easy going, don't make problems up, and i've had 'not for road use' stamped exhausts on in the past that never even got a mention.

Eastern Cruisers in Southend.

Used them for MOT's and they've been great every time, and they have some really interesting custom bikes all over the place to look at whilst you're waiting. Thumbs Up

Not strictly a workshop but our very own Marmalade is a bit of a star at the road side, I believe it is against his religion not to stop (unless he's on a mission) to a stranded bike or car at the side of the road.
He spent quite a few years on the recovery trucks in & around the Bristol area where I heard he had the best get the punter going rate in the company.

I can personally vouch for him, having done an engine swop on my old pan and another time finding a fault that had plagued me with numerous burnt out starter relays, had been in & out of garages without success until that is I rather convienently broke down again a few miles from him, he managed to get me back to his house where he stripped it down into the late evening and found the fault and managed to replace the offending item with bits from his Pan graveyard Laughing
Thumbs Up
