Repacked my exhaust today and now it is a lot quieter. Lost the sound that I liked but at the end of the day it will save my bacon when it comes to the plod.

Reason I am asking if you can overpack as I went to a mates earlier and him and his dad both said to me (on their own) that I may have overpacked it.

There is next to no noise coming out of the exhaust, just engine/airbox noise.

It sounds like a scooter and I hate it Sad

The packing that I bought was too small so we added some of my old packing too it (the best part of it) to bulk it up.

Is that just bullshit or can you really overpack? I would like some noise back...

Cheers!

Overpacking can cause too much back pressure, which, yes can damage your engine or cause performance problems if its too overpacked.
The noise limit is pretty high nowerdays i cant see you having huge problems with the old bill.

I fail to see how over packing can cause excessive back pressure. If anything I imagine it would make it louder if it was packed too tightly. No matter how tightly you pack it, it wont affect air flow, and therefore won't affect back pressure.

This Thumbs Up

Overpacking will stop air from travelling through the baffle into the packing.

over packing will make the exhaust louder as the sound waves wont be able to be absorbed by the silencer.....so if it's quiet then id say should be fine..unless you were ramming in the packing with a bar and tamping it down? as for over packing being dangerous by increasing the back pressure......if you make a pipe longer it will take more pressure to flow the same amount of gas due to the extra drag. Like stingers in stroker exhausts are used to keep the correct pressure in the chamber etc. i very much doubt it would cause a problem on a road bike and deffo no worse than if the packing had gone old and coked up anyhow.

I was going to buy this packing stuff but never used it before. Do i just pack round the inside of the end can and leave a hole in the middle for the gas to flow? If it drops in the can will the gas still flow through the packing?

Open up the end(s) and slide the middle out. There will be packing wrapped around a 'core' take the old stuff off, wrap new stuff around tightly and put it back together.

You may need rivets. I also needed silicone as that was used to reinforce the seals in the first place so I re did it. I assume there are videos on YouTube? On my phone so cba to find a link.

HTH Thumbs Up

My problem being its an old school harris pipe. inside a have three ofset pipes that i cant move or take out so i cant weld a baffle on the end piece as it will not go back on. I was thinking if the gas would still flow through the packaging or try wire wool then i could stuff some in and with a bit of luck bring the db down a tad.

Exhaust gases are not supposed to flow through the packing - it's there to deaden the sound pulses not restrict the flow. If you stuff the exhaust with packing where the gases flow it will just get blown out the back in a shower of sparks. Might get you through an MOT though.

This.

Underpacking can cause power loss, personally don't reckon there's such a thing as over packing. Spoke to some guys at Southern Corss about repacking my old mille's can and they advised packing it down hard with a bar and cramming as much as possible in. Mine had a dip in the power at 4k from a poor packing job.
