Bike was parked up outside the house, on the centre stand, locked and covered up but it's a shared 'layby' type parking which is meant to be just for residents but every Tom, Dick and Harry seems to use it.

Had a knock on the door by a very nice bloke who had been pulling a lorry out from the road across the road and saw it was over (and then took the time to find out who it belonged to).

Given that it was about 3ft from where it was parked and all the damage was taken by the back end, I'm thinking someone clipped it. Throttle lever and clutch lever is bent though and handlebars feel a bit wonky too and yet another cowl has been smashed to bits.

Question is, as fully comped, can I claim this? There's definitely more damage than when I went over a few weeks back which means more monies. I'm gonna give my garage a ring and ask them to pick it up as I'm not happy riding it (I don't have the mechanical know-how to be sure it's safe) and I'm already dreading the bill >.<

Just been rooting out my documents. Is a £450 excess on accidental damage normal? Seems a bit high to me...

Nope, sadly not.

£450 is a tad high, though not unusual. I think £250 is average (mine is £250 excess for a Street Triple 2010 22 y/o rider 2 years NCB). Higher excess is usually a trade-off for a lower premium, unless you are high risk as well (e.g. young, male, previous convictions, dodgy living area etc).

£450 excess on a YBR125? If you dare claim that on your insurance, you are insane Laughing Fuck your renewals Wink

I'd get it checked over by a local biker...slip a beer or two his way. Then just buy the new bits on ebay?

If i took the GSXR right now to a garage.. i'd easily have a bill for £1k, dented tank, scratched plastics and mirrors, fork completely blown, service Laughing

Definitely DIY, where abouts are you from? Close enough (<50 miles) i'll happily have a look.

If I had the know-how I'd be much more confident about assessing the damage. Unfortunately it's the not being able to properly check for damage that's probably more frustrating than the damage itself!

The topbox was cheap enough, that bloody cowl was £100 odd Evil or Very Mad it's the throttle and handlebars that worry me though.

@Paddy: I'm in Pill, just outside Bristol.

Damn, bit far Neutral Well, get some photos and post on here mate.
General bits like levers and bolts are easy to replace.

If handlebars are bent, that sucks but you can get a new set. They may not even be bent, you never know (I agree, more than likely are bent, possible to bend back with wood and a hammer)

What cowl are you talking about?

You can claim but they'll let you pay for the first £450 and you'll lose your No Claims Discount. Best thing to do is source the parts you need on Ebay and change them yourself.

Dont need any mechanical know how to replace parts. Just remember the order they come off the bike and put the new part on the reverse way.

Sorry to hear this has happened to your bike.

Your excess is whatever you agreed to at the time you took the insurance. You'll (probably) have got an appropriate discount on your policy price for having such a high excess, since the whole point of it is to reduce their potential losses, or put you off claiming altogether.

And sorry, but it's almost certainly not worth claiming with that excess for that sort of damage. Even if you did get any money in your pocket, you'll be held down and donkey punched for the next 5 years, on every policy for every vehicle that you own or are insured on.

That said, you'll only know once you get a quote. Make sure you say it'll be your own money your spending, or you may get an inflated estimate.

It's all a bag of dicks, and no mistake.

Now I've found all the papers, it's definitely not worth claiming (I'd forgotten my excess was quite that high).

What I wouldn't do for a handy next-door mechanic right about now xD

No point in claiming if the damage is below about £1200-1300 IMO. Fat excess and years of increased premiums will work out more than fixing it yourself if it is less than that.

YBR's are fairly indestructible, and I definitely wouldn't make a claim for as described above; as it was so eloquently put, you'll be held down and donkey punched for the next 5 years at every renewal and when you factor in the £450 excess claiming would be a no go.

By throttle lever, do you mean brake lever? Set of levers for the YBR should be about £20 from somewhere like wemoto.com and are a 2 second job to fit yourself.

Handlebars may just have twisted round a bit rather than bent, but if they are fubared then a new set will again be about £20 and an absolute maximum of half an hour to do yourself if you've never done them before. Ask in the Workshop section here if you're not sure and they'll see you right.

Pisser about the cowl; what's the damage to the back end?

Oh, and if you find the throttles sticking it's likely that the rubber has just been pushed too close to the centre of the bars; try pulling back towards the edge of the bars before panicking.

Damage doesn't sound too horrendous and should be doable yourself in no time - definitely don't make a claim and it's probably not worth taking to a garage. They're tough little buggers and the chance of the frame being bent or anything would be so slim as not to worry about it.

Good luck Thumbs Up

Thanks for all the advice folks. I'll get some photos of the clutch etc in the morning when it's not bucketing it down and stick them up in the Workshop section for some further help.

If it's a fairly easy task, I'd be more than happy to do it myself, it's just knowing how to Very Happy I'm all for learning how to do straight forward bike 'first aid'.

Hey,

I live in Bristol, just off Junction 16 at the Avonmouth area. If you fancy it I could possibly come over and take a look at it, just PM me about it.

Cheers!

I fell off my YBR125 twice on the same side at 10-15mph and still didn't bend/break anything, cheap as chips to fix
