Had I received this, I'd have deleted it. If I see bad spelling/grammar, it throws up red flags straight away.

It's the fact that they're trying so hard to convince you they're genuine that shows they're not, IMO. Never bought a bike online, but it looks similar to many scam emails you get from places like Gumtree.

Well I dunno. Never sold a bike through someone else before. All the emails iv'e seen are saying about sending the cheque for more than the amount...then the seller returns the bit on top and never hears again.

But iv'e also heard loads about people from the continent buying UK bikes as they are cheaper etc.
This says about sending a cheque, waiting for it to clear and then sending the bike.

I'm obviously not that sure about it or I wouldn't be asking on here.

Anyone who asks for the final asking price is a scammer.

Very much

Plus anyone that sweetens the deal with an extra £20.

Don't matter who it is they should try to offer you less.

Anyone who mentions shipping agent is also a fast way to email deletion

Give him false details, address of local plod station and get him to send cheque there and to turn up and collect bike from there.

Everything about selling my KTM sounded like a scam. I wasn't convinced until they asked for bank details to pay a deposit. I decided to take it through PayPal to be safe and they sent it. I rang PayPal and got them to verify the account hadn't been stolen or suspicious.

Then paid me another deposit to hold the bike for another 2 weeks via PayPal. Finally asked for bank details and they would send a courier to pick it up.

Sent bank details and the money was transferred that day, again, rang the bank for confirmation it was a legit account and it checked out. Two hours later, said courier arrives and takes the bike.

However, the lady who I was dealing with was the Hungarian blokes cousin who lived in England and was very well spoken. The poor English of that email is the give away. Whenever I get them emails I just ask them to give me a number so I can ring and they never email back.

Hey,

That guy seems pretty legit, you may want to shoot him an e-mail asking if he conducts business with the Prince of Nigeria? Laughing!

It's a scam, simple as that. Any e-mails I receive like that I bait them for a laugh then tell 'em to shove it.

For hilarious things to do with these scams including epic baits, look here: https://www.419eater.com/. Some of them are genuinely hilarious like asking the scammer to send a photo of them with the e-mail in stupid poses/really REALLY badly photoshopped passports etc.

Cheers!

Glad it all worked out ok for you, but allowing someone to transfer funds into your account is a ton safer than taking payment via PayPal plus you probably paid for the pleasure of doing so.

The issuer of a direct transfer can't charge it back (aka cancel it) after its gone (either the issuing bank takes the hit or the issuing account holder does - if it's fraud) BUT you can charge back a PayPal transaction weeks later. That's probably why you have to supply a ton of info to log into online banking but only one password for PayPal.

Cash or nothing.

I've sold a couple of bikes overseas, and one using a courier, both times they paid cash.

No arguements then.

Maybe. A "bank draft" is a cheque issued on behalf of the bank itself, rather than an individual. But could you recognise a legitimate one? I used to work for a bank, and I couldn't tell you what one drawn on Ze Bankenzie Auschwitzen would look like. Even if it's drawn on a UK bank, your bank aren't going to treat it any differently than any other cheque.

Ditto wrote:

DANGER, WILL ROBINSON. Banks will credit your account on the basis that the cheque is good, but if it bounces later they'll happily swipe that money back again. Having the cash in your hand isn't going to do you any good if your account gets debited.

Don't bother asking your bank to check if it's legit. Banks can call each other and ask, but the reply is phrased in terms like "If that cheque was in our hands today and in good order then it would be paid". Until it wends its merry way back to the issuing bank that means nothing.

A direct bank transfer is safer, but there's still a small chance of the sending bank later calling foul, if they suspect criminal shenanigans, and you're giving your bank details to Joe Randomtubes, which I'd be loathe to do given the opportunities for him to start setting up direct debits against it.

All that said, it could be legit, but I'd rather take a bit less in coin of the realm, rather than gamble on it.

Question: if he trusts his "shipping agency man" with the value of the bike, why can't he trust him to put that much cash in your hand? Confused

Blatent scam mate, cash or nob off is the only way

For a start if he was half English/half German, his English would be bloody good, Germans learn English from the very start of their education. He wouldn't sound like one of those Nigerian scammers if this was so.

Personally I'd walk away from this one, the bad English looks typical Nigerian fraudster, I've known quite a few Germans and they usually have very good English.

I cheque can credit to your account and look ok for up to two weeks if I remember correctly and still bounce and be recinded. I think that's the scam here, the buyer aims to be in possession of the bike before the cheque bounces.
