Look on fleabay and you can find plenty of 4 yr old + Honda cbf 250's for sale. Decent little bike, but why are they so flaming expensive? Between £2500 and £3000! You'll pick up a new bandit for under 5 grand, or a new MT 03 etc etc.

I just don't get it Confused

They're only worth what someone's prepared to pay. People are obviously buying them at that price.

Must be! But who are they? Is it because they are lightweight and suit some folks, or because they had an old G5 forty years ago? I'm honestly confused Confused

Maybe because they fit the 33hp license bill quite well?

Certainly, they are well under the 33hp limit, but restrictors are commonplace (and often free with new bikes) but I take your point.

I think the ninja 250 also attracts good money for the same reason. I agree its a lot of cash for a cbf250 though, the bigger 500 would be far better.

There are about 11,400 25kW licensees out there at any given time (5700 A2 passes a year, 2 year limit). If there are fewer 25kW bikes than people looking for them, then up goes the price.

CB250's are actually good bikes. They're not fast or pretty, but they're reliable, easy to ride and cheap to run. Unless you do a shit load of motorway miles they're about perfect for commuting on.
Spending money on a 20 makes much more sense than all those who spend thousands on a 125! Laughing

Because very few are prepared to pay what they cost brand new...
They are a 'Useful' if uninsprining, non learner legal commuter.
People that want them, dont want to 'waste' money on them.
If they have the cash to 'waste' to buy new, and accept the depreciation, then they can afford to waste it on something a lot more exiting... so the demand 'new' is not so high, but second hand a lot stronger....
Its all 'market forces'... if Honda Discounted them, then they probably wouldn't sell many more, becouse the people buying them would STILL be humming and haring over the finance deal and depreciation....
So holding the price high, new, stimulating a strong second hand demand, makes the depreciation lower, and makes the new bike more attractive, IF you see the perverse logic in play here.

They did better than that, they discontinued them (in the UK).

YBR250, Ninja 250, CBR250R, Hyosung GV/GT250(R), that's your whack, unless you want to go Chinese-branded or offroad stylee.

Come 2013, expect to see even those start to vanish as new licensees pass their test on 650s and get a 35kW license.

Shame really as the 250 class is a useful tool in the econonmical yet capable of sensible speeds commuter market Thumbs Up

I certainly enjoy mine and the 80 Mpg £2500 to £300 is rather steep for a secondhand one though.

I think CBR250R is the successor of CBF250. It's made in Thailand but still costs as much as £3,688.

Next years GP class will be 250 4 stroke singles, the end of 125 2 strokes, that could bring back some interest in the 250 size.
I'm building up a useful lightweight cb250y, which has the 234cc twin engine, hopefully ideal for my use. They were built in Japan and build quality is good. You can get a rough runner for £400 or a minter for £1500
Only a few years ago my Pan-European got written off, and I've been downsizing since, Tmax, Burgman, Bandit, YBR250, VanVan.
Now I enjoy biking more, you are much more involved in making progress on a small bike, where you need maximum use of the gearbox to overtake or hill climb.

they're dear because the japanese yen is 50% up on the £, the pound has fallen in value and the yen has gone up

CBF250 are 20hp, I'd rather buy a CB250RS (26hp) but even they are fetching anything upto £1000........

FWIW varadero 125's are £4800 new, and there is a 4 week wait to get one round here!
