Can anyone tell me if there is a right way for the crush washer to be installed on sump plug. Does the flat side face the sump

they're usually flat. If its got a step then thats cos its been crushed. Get a new one, they're all of 10p.

A crush washer is the exact opposite of spring steel. It is a soft alloy and is not to prevent vibration-loosening but to seal the sump plug. The soft alloy crushes to fit the small imperfections in the surfaces between the plug and the sump. Once used, it will not crush effectively again, hence why you should always use a new one.

Thanks Weasly, thats solved a 30 year mystery on my old hondas,my sump washers are made of copper! I stand corrected,if leaning to one side still, cheers.

Sump plug washers can be made from copper or aluminium and as weasley says, the reason they are soft is so they will deform when crushed to form a seal, hence the name 'crush' washer. They can be used again by annealing them but they are so cheap that it's not worth doing and i replace them every time. Don't bother trying to source oem washers, just measure the inside and outside diameters and the thickness then buy a bag full from any decent motor factor.

In extremis, I have used a piece of rubber inner tube with a hole in it. Shifty

Thanks everyone
I double checked with a two dealers for Yamaha who advised flat side of crush washer faces sump and the convex side towards sump nut

I stopped using crush washers a while ago.

I use bonded seal dowty washers now. Perfect seal every time and no need to tighten them to within an inch of their lives. They are also re-useable.

My totally oiltight Enfield bullet is testament to their effectiveness.

Would these also be good on brake lines/banjo bolts?

Haven't tried them myself but I know people who do. You just need to watch the thickness so it isn't obstructing the hole in the banjo bolt.

They have to be of the correct spec to use with brake fluid. In terms of the pressure, they are more than sufficient.
