Driving Directions

How do you carry directions on your bike - Sticking them to the tank is the obvious method, but what happens when you have 16 pages worth of directions?!

I printed off a turn-by-turn report from Autoroute - does anyone have any other suggestions on writing them out in a more consice manner?

I usually just scribble down the key points like junctions or road numbers, the AA type stuff is generally a bit too in-depth.

I only usually write down the places i'm heading towards roads i'm going to be on and where i change roads.This is usually enough and can be put on 1 or 2 pages.

I'm with Bendy, I tend to make a note of key roads/junctions/landmarks and try to remember them.

It also depends on the distance. My tank has a range of about 100 miles so I tend to try to memorise about the first 70-80 miles, stop for petrol & get my notes out, memorise the next bit etc.

That's only on the way there though. Going home I just head in the general direction......

I memorise the important points and keep a paper copy in the cubbyhole on my bike in case I forget.

Read the map initially and carry it in bag if i do get lost. I've got a good navigational sense and recognise key A-roads... I'm brilliant at Dead-heading and finding the correct place by chance. Observing landmarks and key points in the road is another idea... you can make "waypoints" on your route which you must pass through to ensure that you haven't straddled off course.

make a mental note of main towns/aroads, at fuel stops ( about 100 or so miles) check next bit, crumpled instruxctions usually on post it in wallet

abroad i tend to follow people with a vague idea..

comiing home as babyyam says head in general direction..

(mmm however not always so successfull heading into northwales and not down to london, from liverpool in may)

You need to learn a little shorthand, can be of your own devising.

I managed to fit the route from Aberdeen to a small town in east sussex on a postcard taped to my leg.

So, from my parents house to Aberdeen (the back way) my route card would read:

X L, sign "L. N.t'n". 3m T L sign "Turriff". 3m T R B9001. Rothien'm, Daviot, 13m Inverurie O 2nd. O 2nd. O 1st A96, Kintore, B.burn, Dyce, 15m Aberdeen.

Reads as:

Left at the cross roads folowing signs to Logie Newton. Continue for 3 miles, at the T junction turn left following signs for Turriff. After three miles turn right at the T-junction onto the B9001. Pass through Rothienorman, Daviot to land up in Inverurie after 13 miles. Take the second exit at the roundabout. Second exit at the next roundabout then the first exit at the third roundabout onto the A96. Pass through Kintore, Blackburn and Dyce to land up in Aberdeen after 15 miles.

You used to be able to get a thing to bolt onto the bars of old brit bikes that had two rollers about 6" apart. You wrote your route onto plastic paper with a wax pencil and rolled it all onto one of the rollers, during the journey you just wound the paper onto the other roller as you followed the directions written on it.
