I got some wheels and other bits powder coated recently and the wheels are a bit disappointing. They have some obvious orange peel is places and around the edges the coat is noticeably thinner and I can see the dark colour coming through from underneath. There are some runs in the coat what looks like black spray on the tape covering the holes. It has a coat of laquer on top. Is this normal with powder coating?

So all in all it looks as though it's been painted. Not sure if it's powder coated. How can I check what it is?

There is also some very rough black area but this is inside where the tyre would be. So not terrible but I would need to get rid of the patch that would be in contact with the tyre

I had some parts powder coated recently and had issues..but just with the stuff that was done in silver
The stuff I had done in black still looks as if it has just been done

The stuff they did in a silver finish (looked almost like polished alloy and looked bloody fab when I got it back) is now rusting through in bobbles and the silver finish comes off if I wipe it and has started turning a matt white colour

I can only assume they did something wrong in the baking process or those metalic finishes are a bit sketchy / finicky somehow

I couldn't be arsed to strip the front end off the car again to take the parts back once I noticed the coat was somehow failing (was a couple of weeks later) ...but as your parts are still loose and not bolted up I'd sling them back at the place that did them and see what they say

Good luck getting it sorted

Regards
Rob

are you happy with it?
if not complain and if they do nothing about it ,name and shame the company this will help others. ive had powder coating done and some has had a run or blemish but i just normally rub it out with wet and dry and repolish but they are normally in areas that u wouldnt see anyway.

It's not a great job but it's all relative to what you paid. The orange peel effect is common and related to the smoothness of the surface though that does kinda look like paint not powder. Wheels are often fairly rough cast so unless you (can't expect them to do it) are willing to spend hours sanding them smooth before sending for coating they won't come out mirror finish like car bodywork.

It's a bit poor that they didn't do an even coat but it looks to be in areas that doesn't matter. How much did you pay for the job? Thats the deciding factor in wether you have cause to complain.

£50 per wheel. I thought this was at the higher end but I might be wrong. I had a handful of small brackets done at the same time in gold plus a mates set of wheels in black and other brackets in black. Best part of £300 in total. His wheels are black and look ok but black is black. It normally hides any imperfections.

gold and silver powder coating is a little different as its the colour coat first then a clear coat..things like plain black etc are just one coat. id not bother with the thin bits on the inside of the tire but the black "object" is not good and the thin bit on the rim by the valve dont look great either....the rest of it looks like a good job tho...I'd take them back. local powder coating place charges £40 a wheel at the mo as they are quite a lot of work to blast and clean before coating.
