Looking for a cheaper alternative oil for my daytona 600, the book says Mobile 1 racing 4T 10w/40 or 15w/50. I'm assuming most of the inline four 600's use the same. What do you recommend?

Go to asda, they currently have an offer on for 4L of Castrol GTX 10w40 for £10. Loads of people on here use it in bikes (me included).

You wont find a half decent oil for less Thumbs Up .

If you have a wet clutch then be sure to get a bike specific oil - it might slip otherwise.

Plenty will be ok but some will suffer..!

I dont want to sound nasty or rude but do you really want to skimp out on engine oil? Fully synthetic motul 10w40 cost me 30quid for 4L last week and you then know its designed for the job Smile
(The semi is cheaper yet and will be fine!)

If you can find the GTX in asda you're a better man than me, I got 2 bottles, before all the local stores were cleared out. Should have got me a few more whilst it was on offer.

If you've room to store it costco do 25l drums for about £40, the 10w40 is marked for diesels, but theres no modifiers so it should be ok.

As for all this bike specific nonsense, its just that, so long as you don't get magnatec or similar its fine.

Edit: been in this afternoon - its 20Ll for 35 quid 10w40, 40 quid for 5w30

Halvoline premium 15/40 has always served me well.

Oh what a mess.... where to start....? OK, here...

Quote:
YamLube has more qualities like API SG, JASO MA, and is even cheaper than Putoline which has less qualites.

API SG is a long-since obsolete oil category introduced in 1988 and replaced in 1994. Barely relevant in today's world.

JASO MA is a clutch slip specification; worth considering when selecting oil for a bike.

Quote:
Different engines run at different temperatures so I would recommend using what the manufacturer says.
I was think of using Castrol GTX myself but Yams run hotter than most and destroy cheap oil...

All Yamahas run hotter than "most" other bikes? Highly unlikely. My Thundercat runs pretty cool, as do they all.

Quote:
...recently I went for putoline cos I couldn’t get any Yamlube.

Yamaha don't make oil. They get it made for them by someone who does make oil. Of course they will recommend their own-brand oil and it will be of a performance appropriate to the requirements, but it doesn't make it the only oil suitable, nor the best.

Also make sure it's semi synth and not fully synth cos your clutch won't last.

Rubbish. There are plenty of fully-synthetic bike-specific oils that will protect the clutch and offer the right friction characteristics.

Not true. Many modern, high performance engine oils for cars have friction modifiers in them to improve efficiency and fuel economy. Magnatec contains something else which does the cold-start protection thing and can interfere with clutches.

A bike-specific oil will use shear-stable additives to prevent viscosity loss by the shear stresses of the gearbox and clutch. They also use additives with appropriate friction characteristics for the clutch - a car oil may or may not work with the clutch, but if it does it is by accident, not design.

For the Daytona 600 I'd go for a semi-synthetic at minimum, 10W-40, and I really would choose a bike oil over a car oil. Shop around for a good price. Triumph now work with Castrol.

To back up a part of the above post...

My Yamaha TRX runs at about 60-65c....very cool.

Nearly all newer bikes run hotter than bikes from 10 years ago...

Having owned one, I used Mobil Semi synth bike oil, was fairly cheap.

Reason, the triumph garage/racing crew near Brands use it in all their bikes, not just Triumphs. My daytona ran quite hot, often hittin 110 - 114 degrees during July...but it never missed a beat, made noises... its good Thumbs Up

Fully synth > semi-synth.

It's only car oils with certain friction reducing agents that will ruin your clutch. Why would Fuchs sell a bottle of oil for £45+ if it would ruin your clutch? Rolling Eyes

As far as I know the only mainstream car oil stated as suitable for wet clutches is castrol GTX high mileage. I had to dig around a bit on castrols site, but it is in the blurb. Apparently some 50s american pickups ran wet clutches, who knew!

I think you should just question why Fuchs would sell a bottle of oil for £45 full stop...oh yeah, because there's loads of mugs that will buy it Laughing
