Not usually, it depends how deep the relevant safety camera unit digs into the records. I would suggest that an untaxed bike usually wouldn't get picked up as that info comes from elsewhere.

can someone help settle an argument - if you get flashed by a normal Gatso camera on a un-taxed bike, would you get done for not having tax?

It is not usual.

The offence of no tax is carried out by the Police on behalf of the DVLA, and so would need authorisation from the DVLA.

The cameras only detect excess speed and are not ANPR

Surely the registered keeper is provided by the dvla who also hold the tax status of the vehicle, anyone can go onto the dvla website and check if a vehicle is taxed.

If the bike is not taxed and not SORN then the DVLA will automatically send you a fine. Don't think it matters whether or not you're speeding! Wink

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

The tax disc, if bought on Monday, would be back-dated to last Friday anyway, so I would think you should be okay on that count ?

I had my car untaxed and used daily for 3 months, reminder was sent to my mother's house. I only realised I had forgotten to tax it was when I came back to find a bright yellow wheel clamp on the car and a demand for a massive bribe.

The uber efficient computer system is a load of tripe, other than the automated tax reminder letter I didn't get any other correspondence. If I hadn't been caught first they could possibly have screwed me when I finally remembered to tax it though.

No it wouldn't. The OP rode illegally and (I think) knows it. Tax doesn't 'back-date', it runs from the time you bought it (or from the expiry of the one it is replacing) until its expiry.

I'd say the chances of getting done for the tax disc because of a Gatso are low, but the chance still exists.

'Back-date' was probably a poor choice of phrase - what I meant was that it would depend on whether the tax only expired at the end of last month ? I was under the impression you get an (unofficial) leeway of about 5 days at the start of the month to get the tax sorted, provided there was no period of being untaxed ?

It was SORNed, there's no grace period.

Try not to sweat it until you're actually accused - the GATSO may not even have film in it.

Don't worry about it unless you were speeding in which case you'll find out within the next couple of weeks, should they pick up on the tax I would say they could possibly check the tax and as you've now got it and paid for this month they normally would'nt bother. I hope you don't hear from them and as I say all you can do is wait and see. Rolling Eyes

On this; you are not taxed until the little disc is displayed on the vehicle.

I don't care how many think because you paid for tax you is taxed... I very narrowly escaped a huge fine recently because I had tax but it wasn't displayed so the copper insisted I wasn't taxed. I showed him the confirmation email (yes, he followed me 4 miles home at 2am) and he still said that it has to be displayed to be in use, no disc present then it aint taxed. Thumbs Down

And I had the complete opposite. Taxed online, so no disc, pulled that night and showed the email receipt, everyone happy.
There is a fine for not displaying but that doesn't mean you are not taxed it just means you didn't have the disc in the window.
I went for years (and was pulled a few times for other things) without showing a disc as they were commonly stolen where I was living at the time. As long as it showed on the database as taxed, no one really cared.

No, you're thinking of truvelos. The traditional Gatso is rear facing.

If it's serious and it ends up in court, I'm sure the question will arise.
