Tongue Piercing

I am wanting to pierce my tongue. Have six in my ears which I know is nothing. I have two Tattoos and pain isn't an issue. I am reading and hearing tons of horror stories and want them all good and bad. I really want to but want to reseach it so I don't do any of the things others did to cause problems.

It really isn't any big deal, pain is minimal. The only bother is that your tounge will swell for a few days, i got through this my sucking on ice cubes. I didn't really have a problem eating except on the first day but i just lived on soup and ice cream (not together obviously) for 24 hours. Had a lisp that i heard but no-one else seemed to hear for about 3-4 days. Had no problems since it healed. After about 2 weeks you will go back to were you had it done and have the bar changed to a smaller one and things get much easier after that. The bar they initially put in is very large and it does take some getting used to, and also the ball on the bottom will rub against the bottom of your mouth to begin with and will feel horrible, I eventually got a smaller ball put on. As long as you stick with it for the first 2 weeks you get used to it and it becomes part of you.
I cannot comment on things that go wrong/bad as mine didn't.

Yes i saw this programme about some piercing when they get infected and they eat away the skin leaving you with half a ear etc lol

If you want it, just do it. While there are horror stories out there, there are few recorded risks attached to it. Most of the problems (as with any piercing) stem from poor piercing and poor aftercare, mostly the latter. Get it done by someone who knows what they're doing, then treat it as you would any other wound and you'll be fine. Most medical objections to this particular piercing stem from it's proximity to the brain, and the potential for local infections spreading in that area, this is the case with any oral wound (cut gums, tooth extraction) and the risk is minimal. Look after it, don't play with it, use a good anti-bacterial mouth wash, and any risks are further reduced. There is also concern about lack of long term information regarding tongue piercing, but I've had mine for around 14 years, and it's still ok. Use well fitting jewelrey (after the initial changedown) to avoid breaking your teeth. Pain isn't an issue, it's one of the least painful piercings. Hope this helps.

I have heard that if they pierce the tongue too far forward it can cause problems, so make sure you stick your tongue out as far as you can for the piercer and you should be ok.

The only thing you have to be careful of is that you have two veins down the sides and not one central if the latter is the case a good piercer won't do it

Only go to a reputable piercer, preferably someone who has pierced the tongue of someone you know.
Whereabouts do you live? Someone here might be able to recommend someone for you...

I got my tongue pireced about 7 weeks ago. I was shitting myself but just forced myself to go and get it done. I can be quite stubborn with myself when I get an idea in my head.

It didn't hurt and I had no problems. My piercer told me that they are the easiest piercing and rarely cause any problems. The only problem I have is I fiddle with it on my teeth all of the time, especially if I'm drunk, nervous or concentrating.

I'd recommend it without a doubt.

Although tongues are a fairly easy piercing there is a nerve that can be caught causing paralysis of the tongue,only go to a reputable piercer and talk to them about the piercing you want.
It's easy to find horror stories of bad piercing but there are lots of good piercers out there.
