Got a £60 Garmin from Halfords. It works. Have to house it in a tank bag as it's not weatherproof.

I have no socket on the bike, but with voice disabled, brightness down I get roughly 4hours.

It's good enough!

I've seen car satnavs that when mounted withing the protection of a fairing work fine. I had a cheapy Garmin I3 many years ago that survived all kinds of weather (didn't survive bouncing down the road though) Laughing

My wife uses a garmin nuvo in a little tank bag with an ear piece, she finds it works fine, I can't stand it! But they are available for lots less than £100 and she uses hers as a music player when riding.

I bought my 1st bike specific one on ebay, a rider Mk1 and had it for a few years until I needed european routes. It was almost as cheap to get a rider with europe as getting new maps at that time so got another rider1 european.

I have to say I'd rather get one 2nd hand for a bike than a car one but there are people on here who have completely different ideas Laughing

I tried a tt one in a tank bag for a while and it was shit. Too far out of the eyeline and no where to connect an earpiece.

Replaced it with a zumo mounted to brake lever which is orders of magnitude more useful. If you're likely to use it anymore than once a month or so spend the extra. By the time you've got a mount /bag its not hugely cheaper anyway.

I have a £47 car Navman, carry one of those zippy food bags for when it rains, and a cardboard sun visor that I gaffer tape round it when it's sunny, mounted with a car mount that's drilled and bolted to the screen, and the charger lead runs to a 12v socket that takes up my under seat storage, still need to buy a mini usb to 3.5 headphone jack adapter so I can hear it. It looks a cvnt and is usually more a distraction than a help (and it covers the clocks when it's mounted) but it works for me, have to turn it off once I'm close to home as for some reason I tend to look at it for directions even when I know the way, god knows why.

I use a garmin nuvi with full europe for touring and its given me no probs. Got it online for £54 quid. I use a special case that straps to your handlebars or top yoke called 'so easy rider'. Its completely waterproof and shock-proof and it is easy to use the touch screen through the plastic window with gloves on.

It only has a four hour life, so if im touring i connect it to the battery via a cigarette charger which also works fine. You DONT have to spend £££'s on a motorcyle system!

Bought a Navman 475 (about £65 with charger and case etc). Got it for the g/f's new job a few months ago, cos she's got zero sense of direction.
VERY easy to learn and to use. Decent battery life etc.

I've also used it on the bike in a tank bag, and all seems good Thumbs Up

awesome,what exact models yours ?

thanks

Nuvi 265w. Doesnt have a headphone socket mind as i prefer not to use them. You can get a universal ear piece that picks up the audio from the speaker though.

I got a Garmin ETrex gps, comes with a handlebar mount (meant to be for bicycle) but did fine for me in Europe, handy when finding petrol stations in rural parts. I must admit it is a little slow at calculating and updating in cities.

I use an old TomTom GO 710 - I have a new car one and this was in a drawer doing nothing, so i thought I'd give it a go.

When I first used it I simply put it in a bumbag and used headphones to listen to the instructions. This worked OK and with the screen turned off it would go for hours on a charge.

However, recently I went to Germany and decided I'd like to see the screen for those unfathomable European motorway intersections. So I mounted it above the clocks, under the screen using sticky-backed velcro. I already have a permanent fly-lead connected to my battery for my Optimate charger, and they do a weather-proof cigarette-lighter accessory that plugs into this, which I have. I ran the standard in-car charger from under the seat, along the side of the tank and to the cockpit area. I then bought a cheap 3.5mm extension cable from Maplins and routed that back from the cockpit to the front of the seat. This meant that when I wanted to get off I just dismounted and the headphones pulled out of the extension (in truth I always forgot it was there until it unplugged, but this was exactly why I set it up like this). I then use Sennheiser in-ear sound damping earphones.

The sat nav didn't move at all in use, it got me to das mittel of nowhere and back in blazing sunshine and some pouring rain near the end - the fairing and screen kept the rain off the unit and it survived no problem.

It's not pretty, but it's very effective and pretty much free (since I already had all the bits I needed, except the 3.5mm extension lead and mount). The location is perfect in terms of visibility and readability and it's good to have speed limit and speed camera notifications when abroad, as well as a GPS speed reading to work from (my bike's speedo over-reads quite significantly I discovered!). I could easily use the unit with gloves on (unlike an iPhone) and the velcro meant it was instantly and easily unmountable.

One thing about the TomTom GO 710 (and others) is that the car mount is active. In other words, the unit mounts on the mount, then all connectivity is done through the mount (power, headphones, auxiliary aerial etc). This means if you want to use headphones you have to have the mount attached. I found a broken mount on eBay, removed all the suction gubbins and reduced it to just the electronics part - this then 'mounts' into the back of the unit and allows connectivity without taking up much space at the rear.

I was damned if I was going to buy a dedicated sat-nav when we had 3 in the house already (not including 2 iPhones).

I've got a Zumo 400, with some 'acquired' maps.

Came with a mount, RAM bits and charging cradle. Can't fault it, although sometimes wished I'd forked out a little more and got something with bluetooth. (Although I've never bothered to plug the audio in!)

edit: Make sure you set it to 'quickest' rather than 'shortest' route, otherwise you'll find yourself on all sorts of scary singletrack 'roads'. Either that or it's punishing me for piracy!

think i'll get that, seems abit cheaper than the soo easy rider and the feedback seems alright for it

still not decided which satnav to get yet though lol

They're cheap for a reason, they don't cope with road spray or fine mists of water too well at all. These days I use my HTC Desire in THIS strapped to my left arm, throws music, navigation and phonecalls into my lid via a cheap A2DP bluetooth clip and I've got some conductive thread through the finger tip of my glove so I can use the phone when stopped, also means I don't need to mess around dismounting anything from the bike, can just unplug it, step off and walk away.

I've got a tomtom one, garmin i3 and an android phone.

-Tomtom's reception is very good in city centers. (ram mount with ram cradle)
-Garmin's screen is crytal clear. Sun glare is not an issue at all. (push bike mount)
-Android is perfect for everything BUT you can't use the capacitive touchscreen with gloves. (ebay waterproofish iphone bike mount)

I tried navigon, copilot, igo, google navigation and ndrive. Navigon and Ndrive is very good.
