That looks pretty good as far as eastern european bikes go!
Where are these made? I thought a factory in India had rights at one point?

I love it because its ugly, slow and its a two stroke. Stick a set of offensive spannies on there and I'm sure it would embarrass big bikes.

Now I'm all for odd bikes. Good god I've owned two different MZs.

But that statement is ludicrous! I bet that thing makes like 25bhp, and probably 23bhp with some silly spannies.

I bet the technology is ancient. How much are they? It looks like a decent commuter bike. Is there any claimed power figures? Am I way off?

How about 23hp?
I reckon £3500 is a little too steep though, they'd probably do better at around the 2k mark. Plenty of cheap chinese 250s these days for half the price unfortunately.

It's a model 640 Jawa from around 1990 with an auto oiler and a fancy digital dash. I think that one also has an electric start bodged onto the side of the primary transmission cover. Fuck knows where they got them from because I thought they'd stopped making the things a while ago. I suspect they are either being manufactured in the far east somewhere or someone found a warehouse full.

There is absolutely no way on earth they have UK type approval for them so they must be being imported and registered individually because the emissions they produce are immense. They were pushing their luck back in the early 90's and were bringing them in with the oil pump set lean as hell to get them through the test (they were designed to run on 40:1, later ones were set to 50:1 and got away with it. Latterly they were running 70:1 and seizing).

It'll overheat like a motherfucker with that fairing on, they've tried this before with the model 638 "de-luxe" which I had about 15 years ago (same bike but pre-mix and points ignition).

They are truly horrible in a marmite kind of way. I have an occasional dalliance with them then get pissed off with the sucession of niggly faults and throw them in the back of the shed. There's two there now. If you really want one, get a second hand model 638 or 640 off ebay for a hundred quid and stick an aftermarket fairing on it. I paid £20 diesel money for my last one to be delivered to my house.

Pictured below, Jawa 638 de-luxe circa 1989

It'll embarrass nothing but yourself. Believe me.

I had one with a +2.5 overbore, polished inlet ports and head, bumped compression (lapped in head and barrels, running no base gasket), chamfered the trailing edge on the pistons to advance the port timing and tweaked the exhaust, carb, ignition timing and gearing to the limit. Pretty sure I saw 80 on it once. Saw a big fucking hole in the piston and the small end needle bearings embedded in the cylinder head not long after.

It'll embarrass them to be seen with it, but they'll soon clear off Wink

Jawa did some nice older race bikes, but the fairing on that thing is horrid. If that's you sort of thing why not get an old RG?

The old Jawas did about 80. And that was accompanied by filling-loosening vibes, hideous racket and considerable smoking. Great fun Laughing

You can get that at a dentists. Minus the embarrassment.

Hah my guess would have probably been further off if I'd googled it!

As Stinkwheel said, get an old Jawa (or preferably MZ) for a hundred quid and bolt a big stupid fairing on.

In fact MarJ, why not buy an MZ 301 Saxon 'fun'. Which is an old MZ with a big stupid fairing on... You pretty much already own this bike!
