used new or scrubs?

So i finally managed to get hold of reasonably cheap bike to use on track. 99 cbrf.
Basically to only thing the bike wants for are tyres - both front and rear have been 'commuted' to death,
Now being a tight basterd i cant bring myself to go out and buy a new set of tyres so im thinking of the following:

1) pair of scrubs from ebay - downside to this is they seem to fetch a lot these days as its an easy source for selling/buying. And never sure what your getting really!

2) used tyres from ebay - try and match a pair up over a week or so, plenty of half decent front tyres for around £20 - matching up with a half decent rear could prove difficult.

3)used front, new rear - bit pricey (im tight)

4) heres the 'cunning' plan - remove the rear tyre from my road bike (about half worn but perfectly round) fit to track bike with used front of same make. Buy new rear for road bike. That way for around the £100 mark I get brand new rear tyre on the road bike, half worn rear on the track, and used (half wornish) matching front.

What would ye do

There are absolutely no tracks local so cant loiter around for scrubs on trackdays.

5) have considered pestering the local bike tyre shops see if they have any good part worns - any one had any sucess with this method?

Depending on your pace, you ideally want a set of Racetec/Supercorsas but you're running Novice/lower Inters you'll be more than fine with sporty road rubber.

They'll last longer because they're harder but theres not as many part worn ones going.


Personally I'd go for some Racetec/Supercorsas, you can get a good set for about £50-70 which'll last 4+ trackdays depending on pace.

can you not pull the rubber from your bike, put it on the track bike and get new shoes for yours?

stay with road tyres until you get to fast group otherwise it could get costly quickly. when you change over your pace will increase more as you should already be use to tyres moving around which I'm afraid if you wanna go fast you HAVE to get use too.

I know of peeps who get a tiny amount of spin and they shit themselves.

Been looking for some part worn road tyres for over a week now but not having much luck. Anything half decent seems to go for silly money so im thinking of just some cheaper new tyres now.

Ive booked 2 trackdays and at the minute I plan on doing a couple more before the years out.

So im now thinking a pair of the following for around the £150 delivered mark:

Maxxis Supermaxx sport
around £145

Dunlop Qualifiers (got these on the gixer, not over sure about them)
around £155

Pirelli diablo corsa (old stock??)
around £165

bt014's
around £150


So its probably gonna be one of the above (thinking the maxxis) or look at some tyres around the £200 mark for the gixer and put the half worn dunlop qualifiers on the track bike

any other tyres around the £150-60 range? id like something thats 'reasonable' in the wet also incase its pissingdown on any (or all!) of the days.

I have some Maxxis tyres on my Bandit, though it isn't trackday'ed, they inspire a lot of confidence in it's abilities, giving good lean angles

Keep an eye on www.motoforum.net; could also see if you can get to your local club racing meeting - you probably will have to pay to get in, but usually can get some pretty good deals. If it's the same track you're going to be riding, useful to get some 'tips' too .

well i went for another option alltogether in the end. New pair of M3's for the gixer and the Dunlops are going to be donated to the track bike.

Is it adviseable to remove the centre stand? the stand on the cbr doesnt flick back all the way by itself and as its covered in thick axle grease i really cba to clean it all up and relube it so im thinking either secure it in place with some ties to rear shock linkage or something or just remove it all together
