After I took my bike in for oil change at the garage, I realised I hadn't checked when my MOT and tax expired. Once I had I found out the MOT was up in February and the tax on the 1st June.

Whilst it was in the garage I got them to MOT it which has now been completed. However, I'm about to tax the bike online and the DVLA website is telling me this:

"There has been a gap in the licensing of the vehicle.

Previous Tax Disc or SORN declaration expired on: 01 06 2011

It is an offence to be the registered keeper of a vehicle that is unlicensed and does not have SORN declared.

You can apply for a tax disc from today’s date, with a Licence Start Date of the 1st of this month. However, please note the above offence will still apply.

DVLA’s Continuous Registration Enforcement Centre may be in contact with the registered keeper regarding this gap in licensing."

Should I go ahead and tax it now, and hope that's the end of it? Or should I try and contact them and admit my failings and offer to pay the tax from the period in between 01st June and today? Would feigning ignorance be a suitable get-out if they did catch up with me and ask why my bike wasn't taxed or SORN'd for over a month?

Anyone had any experience with this? Much appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Tax it now, if they send you a blackmail letter then respond with "I SORNEd it by post, talk to the Royal Mail".

Thanks for your response, would there be no comeback from them with that response? Would the repercussions be more severe if they somehow found out I'd used the bike whilst I'd (supposedly) SORN'd it?

I had the same message come up in the past. My bike died and I whenever I thought about it it gave me the hump so I ended up forgetting to sorn it.

Sorned about a month after it expired. Nothing has happened 18 months later.... maybe they will turn up at my deathbed?

just go and tax it down the post office now and forget about it, they wont even bother you over a month, I have forgotten to do mine before and not hear anything over it.

if they do just do what rogerborg said tell em you sent it in the post but I doubt it will even come to it

do it now now and tax, they usually follow up when you gone past 6 months. Even after the tax has ran out there is usally a 1 month threshold but I can't see that info anywhere again

Thanks all for your advice. Got it taxed online, so hoping to never hear anything from them about it. If I do I'll say I SORN'd it.

Cheers.

I sold my SV650S in March and when the person there asked if it was taxed I said yes and looked for the disc but couldn't find it, to check I looked on the DVLA Vehicle Enquiry website and as it transpires I hadn't had tax for five months! Shocked!

I thought I'd taxed it as I got the reminder and taxed 3 other bikes at the same time, it just slipped my mind I guess!

I taxed it online, got that message and have not heard anything since, I'm sure you'll be okay.

HTH! Thumbs Up!
