...or what I've been doing for the last few months! (Kitchen whoring time Smile)

Not sure if this is the right place to post it, if not mods please feel free to move somewhere more appropriate!

Well its taken me months of work and cost me £too f*ckin much, but its now pretty much done (few minor bits to do but nothing major or expensive!).

We moved into the house about 4 years ago now and as time and funds have permitted, I've worked my way round and done all the other rooms but left the most expensive and complex job until last. During that time we've done all our cooking on a small 2 ring electric hob, in a tiny toaster oven, and in the microwave. The kitchen was missing even the most basic things like a finished floor covering, (it wasn't even level!), and we were using it as a dumping ground for all the tools etc while I did the rest of the house. It was also home to 3 push bikes! Fortunately Mrs Codemonkey is a very patient lady Laughing

So, what follows are a few photo's starting at the point the electrician had finished rewiring it. All other work except the electrics I did myself, and I'd have done that as well if it weren't for the pesky "Part P" certificate required these days.

Bear in mind I've never fitted a kitchen before, and don't do this sort of stuff for a living (I'm an electrics/software engineer) so spend most of my life browsing the net working at a PC Wink

Nice job on the coving, my brain always does a bsod (or kernel panic if you're a Linux engineer) when it comes to figuring out the angle to cut the corners, I wasted about four metres of the stuff doing our teeny weeny kitchen.

looks good, well done Thumbs Up

kitchens are a doddle to fit these days, most come pretty much built up so all you have to do is put them in place and fix em, then put the doors and handles on.

Did you do the worktop mitre yourself? not the easiest things to get right if your not in the trade with all the right tools etc..

Yeah they're a piece of piss, all the screw holes are drilled ready to attach the handles, and the carcasses have the holes pre drilled and routed out to accommodate the hinges, and the backs of the doors where the hinges fit, you know, that real important bit that needs to be precise, that bit that you need an expensive router to drill the holes in the exact right place, well, they don't do that fvcking bit do they Evil or Very Mad Yes, an angry man that still needs to replace 2 doors on his cheap ass "miami" style (lol) kitchen that he bought from B&Q, because I went right through them with the router that I bought just to fit the fvcking doors!

Back on topic, kitchen is very nice op, well done Thumbs Up

Glad I didn't go for a B&Q one if they don't even route the hinge fittings. Got mine from Wren kitchens and i'm well impressed with the units. They're 18mm carcasses and come ready built with the doors already hung, just need to drill for the handles and fit the legs. The hinges and draw sliders (made by Blum) are also much better than B&Q units, having the dampers integrated (you can't slam them and they have a really nice soft close unlike those pathetic little plunger things that B&Q stick inside).

In theory it should have been a doddle to fit, but some of the carcasses required extensive mods to accomodate the plumbing running behind them. I also fitted plenty of check valves on the hidden pipework so wanted to be able to access those with a screwdriver.

I did do the worktop mitre myself. The plan was to borrow my old mans router and I bought a template for the cut. However he'd left the router in the shed and the plunge mechanism had seized up. When he tried to free it up (with a large hammer Rolling Eyes ), he smashed the end off so had to go buy one myself. This is where things start to go wrong, yes, I made the mistake of having the Mrs with me whilst shopping for tools. Usually I just use it as an excuse to treat myself to the best I can afford, but since she was stood next to me I compromised and bought the next model down. Big mistake, it only had a 1/4" chuck. Turns out you need a 1/2" one if you're going to use bits long enough to cut through a 40mm thick worktop Mad Ended up having the do the cut half way through, then turn it all over, re jig it and cut from the other side. I ended up paying more in router bits than I saved by buying the cheaper router. As a result of all of this, I didn't get the joint perfect but its good enough and i'm happy that I did it rather than pay someone else, and now I have the template and knowledge for the next time, I'll just buy a bigger router Very Happy

Probably the hardest part was drilling the holes for the extractor vent and waste pipe with core drills. Took me 2 hours to do the 110mm one for the extractor (using a drill and bit hired from HSS) and 3 for the one for the waste (cheapo SDS drill I got from from Netto a few years ago and bit from screwfix). Seems the bricks in my house are very hard, the sparky whinged about this also when chopping the patress boxes in Laughing

Also the floor wasn't level. The room was originally a kitchen with floorboards and seperate larder/outhouse with concrete floor. Both at slightly different levels (concrete slightly raised) so I had to put 6mm plywood down on the floorboards and then build up the concrete to the same level with some self leveling floor compound.

All in all its been a great excuse to expand the tool collection but I'm glad its all done now!

Extractors are a sod to fit unless you've got some serious hardware but they're well worth the effort.

Never go tool shopping with the misses Tut Tut

I have the same extractor above my cooker, I was told when I bought it it was a flu'less extractor and I was to use the chimney that had vents in it and not the plain chimney that also came with it, was I lied to or did you choose to fit a flu for effectiveness?

It takes the steam away fine flu'less but it does blow a lot of hot air out the chimney vents

I'm going to make a suggestion. The back wall behind the table and chairs just looks bare. Makes it look weird when so much is going on in the actual kitchen bit. I suggest a huge wall mounted canvas photo of an R6. Thumbs Up

There were 2 options for fitting (flu or flueless) like you said, I always intended to fit one that vents to the outside since removing the moisture from the air was my main concern rather than just the smells and oil etc.

Mine's a Baumatic (as is the oven) and didn't come with the carbon filters which are required if you want to use it in the recirculate mode (flu'less).

Laughing I only see gas prices going one way, and fast since Russia now has us by the balls, at least we can make our own electricity still!

Regarding the bare wall, we've already been looking for a nice big canvas, sadly not an R6 though, probably some big closeup of some flowers or similar sh*t. You've given me ideas for what to put on the wall in the office/spare room now though Thumbs Up

Also we found out yesterday that there's a good chance the Mrs might be getting a 7 month full time contract for some work starting in September, so chances of getting something a bit bigger than the R125 are a slim possibility now Very Happy
