I need to insure a bike for a couple of days. It only costs me £70 a year for the insurance so the idea of spending £20 for one of these "one day insurance" type companies doesn't really appeal.

What I want to do really, is get some insurance, then cancel it within the 14 day cooling off period, once I'm done with it.

Problem is though, all the insurance companies I've looked at charge an admin fee even if you cancel within the cooling off period. Not really cricket.

First direct, for example, offer free cancellations for 3 months for cars.

Anyone know of any companies that do this for bikes?!

If it only costs 70 per year, how much is an Ebike policy for a month?

Also, I thought they only charged you a percentage of the days you used? I'm sure if you ring up and tell them the sale of the bike didn't go through they can't charge you more than a couple of quid.

Yes, they can and they will.

If they're doing it right, then they can only charge you their actual costs incurred, i.e. an initial arrangement fee plus a pro rata fee for the number of days used.

They're probably way over-charging on that initial fee, and it would be pretty trivial to demonstrate that - if eBike can do you a month for £20, how much of that is the arrangement costs? - but it's probably not worth your while making an issue out of it.

Heh, it might be funny to take out an eBike 1 month policy, then cancel it after 3 days and see if they try to charge you a cancellation fee.

Fucking had it with insurance companies, I can't get my 3rd years NCB because my current insurer is asking for silly money for FC and I'm not going anything else as I want the bike to be covered if I slide it down the road.

3 years NCB is on Sept 7th but I need to use the bike daily from now so the only way to get a decent price is to cancel my insurance with my current insurers (Adrian Flux) and move to MCE bikes at £880 FC with 2 years NCB.

It's all a big fucking scam.

When I went back to look at a bike, intent on purchasing it I took out a full year's policy with Motorcycle direct.

Just make sure at the end there will be a tick box that says - motorcycle purchased yet? And put no.

As long as you cancell within 14 days you get every single pence back Thumbs Up

Nuff said.......

Do you have any bike policies running ? If so can you add the bike to that ?

In effect you are trying to fiddle the system, one reason that policy prices are heading up.....

I think it was these I was with and got every single pence bar one back.

I think they actually charged me 'pro rata', but I took out the insurance Friday evening (after they closed I presume) and cancelled first thing Monday (just after they opened). So I would presume they actually calculated it for the few minutes it was in their 9-5 system.

How much excess? And what would you be paying TPFT?

I ask because ((FC - TPFT) + excess) is the amount of damage that you'd have to cause before the policy nets you a penny versus fixing the damage yourself.

FYI, they make their money back by selling your contact details to every spammer under the sun.

Not had a problem with them that didn't seem more likely to be 'The Bike Insurer' - which I definitely DOES sell your details to spammers.

Yeah - by that definition they all seem to be doing it wrong. £50 cancellation fee (plus pro rata use) seems to be fairly common.

The eBike policy is £30 a month.

Thanks bikertomm and G - I'll check them out.
