To cut a long story short, my bike will not start.

At first it was completely dead, then the neutral/ oil lights came on but still would not start. Pushed it 2 miles to my mechanic who has said either battery (it had a new one 6 months ago) alternator, voltage regulator or worst case all 3 of them.

Now my question is, would leaving the headlight switch constantly on (with ignition off) drain the battery? I used to just switch it on when I was going out for a ride, but my (all knowing) boyfriend told me to leave it on all the time as I kept forgetting to turn it on.

This was 1 week ago, today the bike fails to start....... coincidence? Rolling Eyes

I left the light switch on, on mine a couple of months back and it completely deaded the battery.

No it won't drain the batery if you leave the light switch on with the ignition off. The ignition controls the main power to the bike, so even though the headlight is "switched on" this is largely irrelevent since there is no current going through the bike unless your wiring is up shit creek. The ignution breaks the circuit further upstream than the headlight is, so the headlight can't come on if it has no power.

I hope that sort of makes sense.

Basically when the ignition is off, but your light switched on, does the headlight come on? It shouldn't. If does you have wiring issues.

I would suspect Reg/rec failure on an NC30. They're well known to be rubbish. Bump starting it should work.

Then your battery must be massively flat. So flat that it can't even power the coils up. Your wiring is ok. Leaving the headlight on with the ignition off makes no difference to powe consumption when resting. I do it all the time on my CBR.

Bung your battery on charge. Should start after that. Then you can try to figure out if you have a dud battery or if your reg/rec is dud. Normally when the reg/rec goes they just fail to charge the battery, so it runs flat. They are notoriously weak on NC30s. You can get uprated ones from Rick Oliver IIRC. Some owners wire in a PC fan to prevent them from overheating.

The NC30 reg/rec is the same type and fitment as for CBR600's up to a certain age at least. I fitted one to mine a bought a new battery and all was fine.

FML!!! Shocked

I hope to god its not the regulator, the mechanic phone me earlier and said he put the battery on charge last night and it would not take any charge at all. I have ordered a new battery and see what he says after hes changed it.

I'm despondent now! £220 quid!! doh!!! Thumbs Down

It doesn;t have to be a VFR Reg Rec, you can use practically any from any similar bike. C_dugs CBR600, is Still happily using a Triumph S4 Reg Rec, AFAIK. You should be able to pick a random Reg rec up on Ebay for Sub £30, chances are it would be better than the Honda one.

It may work now that you have fresh battery but you need to find out why the battery was flat in the first place. the regulator may be still faulty.

If you can get hold of a multimeter then start the bike and put it on the terminals of the battery. Rev the bike and the voltage should rise and fall. Should jump up to around 14v volts when you rev the bike and drop slightly when it idles. Thumbs Up

+1 for checking the r/r and stator as you may be buying another battery if they're borked.

It's not his bike, he doesn't care. Better if he doesn't fix it, that's just more work for him later.

You can get a basic digital multimeter delivered for under a fiver. It'll pay for itself the first time you use it.
