Bought a Peugeot recently off ebay, had it HPI'd and that came back clear. Car wasn't in as good condition as described so negotiated some money off and went on my way.

Got home, gave it a proper clean and going over and it started to become apparent that it had been involved in a pretty heavy crash on the left hand side; looks like the front and rear wings have been replaced along with a dented front rim and replaced wing mirror glass. In my defence, the way the car was parked in the driveway hid these faults and it drove ok, but ultimately it's my fault for not checking it properly.

Wasn't happy, wrote the guy a recorded delivery letter strongly suggesting that he come and pick the car and refund us as the car clearly wasn't as described, which was received on the 8th. Obviously I didn't expect to get anywhere with this but nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Anyway, looking at the MOT last night and it didn't look quite right; closer inspection showed the DEC of the expiry date to seem doctored (very nicely, if I'm honest).

Checked on the motoinfo site, and the mileage on it tallies up to an MOT that was done last April, not December and my car seemingly doesn't have a valid MOT on it at the moment. It has had a subsequent test apparently according to the site, which I'm assuming was a fail but I can't find out the full details of this test or why it failed off the site.

Half was paid by Paypal for the car and half by cash.

Obviously, kiddy is getting a phone call a bit later on and I'd like to resolve this in a friendly manner. What else can I do though If I don't get a result? Would the police be interested in a bent MOT or would it still be seen as a civil matter?

Sorry for the long post.

Direct Gov MOT history check should tell you EVERYTHING! - And its free
https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/Mot/DG_10020539

I would guess that doctoring a document would be fraud? or some count of deceit?

The police will be interested in this one Thumbs UpI would also get in contact with paypall to retrieve your funds...

Error: We are unable to process your request because of one of the following reasons:

the test number does not exist.
the document number from the V5C registration certificate does not exist or does not match the vehicle registration mark.

Fuck.

It was that site I used yesterday that let me know the last pass of the MOT was last April; this error's come up when I've tried to use the history checker. The document reference number I use was off the new keeper slip as I haven't received the V5 yet if that makes a difference?

Will do. I think my action plan is to phone him today, let him know that the MOT is bent and give him one more chance to pick up the car and give us the cash back. Once the cash is checked and banked (if that happens which is unlikely I know) then I'm getting the police involved anyway as I don't want anyone else stuck with the car. I got done by a 19 year old kid FFS Laughing

Pissed off with myself more than anything; I've bought and sold 20+ vehicles over the years, did the right thing by HPI'ing it, but this was a pretty good forgery. Only good thing is that I now know about that MOT site linked above for the next vehicle I buy.

I think you're doing the right thing, try to get the cash back by threats of the police etc, but if you go direct to the police he might get done, but you'll not get your money back.

Then police after.

Did he give you any old MOTs?

Use the MOT sheet number (top left) in directgov and it should give you ALL reasons for fails.

Tried the above; thanks for the links. However...

All passes shown have expired. There are later tests for this Vehicle under a more recent Test Number or DVLA Reference Number.

I can't find a link though to give me what the "later tests" brought up, as this is the latest certificate I have for it.

It's been doctored from May to December, not April as I previously posted. And fairly obviously in a specific light dammit Evil or Very Mad

the mot site is prob not working now as they have recieved the NEW V5 number so the older green slip won't work (altho sometimes the green slip has an extra digit in the ref no try dropping the 1st digit in the ref no)
doesn't sound good tho was it a private sale or a trader?

if you paid via paypal, open up a case stating the item is not as described. If the guy doesnt respond you can escalate it and paypal will refund your money

Problem is is that would only recover half the money; we paid the rest by cash. Might just be worth recovering that though and then breaking the car to recover as much of the rest as possible, or sticking it on ebay honestly advertised. This is a worst case scenario though.

Yup, and I have no doubt that was his correct address. The letter I sent recorded delivery last week was also received on the 8th. No pick up on the phone, so I've sent him a text letting him know that I know the MOT is bent, and that if I hear nothing from him within 24 hours I'm getting the police involved.

Go to the police after giving the guy a ring, inform him you can settle this before you ring the police and report it. See if he is happy refund you etc.

If he is, get your money back...then report him Wink

If you dont...ring the police and inform them you are going round there with a gun... they'll soon be there Laughing

Dropping the first digit comes up with no later tests for this vehicle.

Might be worth giving them a ring in any case

Open a case right now, you can always cancel it if you sort it out in person.

Can you get half your money back via paypal? Not all of it, but better than a kick in the teeth!

Presumably if Paypal refund half the money we'll have to give the car back before the refund goes through, no? I've never had to deal with them in this way before.

Going to call them about Shereen's idea too; would be nice if we can recover the lot through them.

I work for an electrical company and specifically sell on ebay and amazon. There are a lot of rules and loopholes on ebay but I believe one of the loopholes to be:

Unless the seller has specifically requested that returns be sent back by the buyer, then you can request that the car is collected by the seller.

Failing that a tracking number showing confirmation of delivery to his address is all that is needed to prove that you have retuned an item, thus paypal will release the money back to you. Geddit?? Wink

Your best bet is to talk to paypal, they are a pain the arse for sellers like me, but they will always protect the buyer Thumbs Up

EDIT: I would also make sure Paypal know you will be contacting the rozzers.

EDIT EDIT: I have looked further in to this and I am 99% sure that you can demand that the seller arranges the collection themselves - the consumer only has to safely pack the goods up and make them available for collection - in your case ensure you are at home for the car to be collected.
