i'm moving house Dance! Currently got a small 2 bed place and moving around 100miles. I got a quote from pickfords, and they just keep finding things to add so now we stand a £2500 for packing, removal to store, then from store to our house. on top of that they want 70quid a week to store our stuff. I think this a con.

I'm not paying my new employer is, but still i'd rather not pay these money grabbing scum-bags anything.

So recommendations for good removal firms that don't want to charge more then the cost of buying my own van to move my shit!

Thanks

J

Cheapest way is to rent a lorry and do it yourself. Problem comes in when you can't move in right away and have to store stuff, they can charge whatever they like. Cheaper way to store stuff might be to rent a container for a few weeks on a small name storage site, rather than paying for climate controlled and all that jazz.

This sort of thing https://www.wjwselfstorage.co.uk/prices.html

https://www.storagesolutionswales.com/terms.html (wrong side of the Beacons but you get the idea)

I think removals is a mafia type situation, there is a badge on all the big firms called the "British Association of Removers". They set some kind of standards for quality https://www.bar.co.uk (which is a good thing) but I would imagine they also set prices articifically high.

Though even some ropey looking outfits have the badge, so i'm not sure what it stands for.

Though it removes hassle factor completely, and if they break anything you can claim it. It's nice to have someone pack all your shit, move it, then unpack it at the other end.

You need to ring around and play companies off against each other. Other big ones are Robinsons, Doree Bonner and Bishops Move.

There are a few smaller independants around this area, Wilkins (Henley) Ltd, Camp Hopson (just up the road from you, near the VOSA test centre). Luke Bros Ltd (Oxford), Palmers of Windsor. I've not worked in removals yet, so I can't vouch for any of them, but I would probably use an independant if they worked out cheaper.

Get at least half a dozen quotes, and you can search for some more on that BAR site.

If you end up doing it yourself and need a driver, or a hand to lift and shift. I can help.
