I've had
BMW Funduro
XJR1300
Harley Sportster
Thundercat
Daytona 650
Harley Sportster
Thundercat
Vepsa px125
Thruxton (just sold)
But now what??

Only really need something for town riding, so good handling is a bonus would a kwak 636 be too sporty for town?

Yes, it would. Like using a thoroughbred racehorse for pulling a milk-cart.

Town riding, 125 Wink

No point paying silly petrol/tax/insurance/tyres if you are town riding.

To be fair, I'd be very happy with a 125 as long as I wasn't doing >10 miles.

What about a supermoto? Maybe a KTM 640/690?

I chose a GSXR1000 K6 for easy town riding.

Not for everyone, but gives you the best tools possible to get from A to B as quickly as you can want.

I find it less fun on open roads - where going fast easily I find a bit boring compared to lower power bikes.

If you want a 600 for town riding then get something where your ass isn't going to be higher than your head. Sports bikes for a lot of people are a pain in town - they are small, have crap mirrors, hard suspension, are very leant forward, high pegs, low bars etc etc etc.

Something upright like a 600 naked (hornet/fazer) or supermoto (DRZ400 for example) or even a TDM900/XT600E depending on what you like to do with it on the weekend. If it is just for town riding and you don't intend on carving up the countryside then a 125 or 250 would be fine, cheap fuel/tax/consumables/insurance etc, maybe even a CB500 as a compromise between a bit of performance and cheapness.

While I chose the GSXR as the 'least extreme' of the sports bikes, I find it did me fine.
Definitely better than a trail bike for getting through tight stuff in town because it's a decent chunk narrower - obviously not an issue if you don't have that situation.
Also got a much better spread of power/torque - first gear will cover all six gears on most singles.

I must admit the GSXR1000 made an excellent bike for lightspeed through early morning traffic Twisted Evil Had the mirrors folded in at most points Laughing

If its town and you want to save fuel, get some 125.
If fuel/tyres/tax/insurance is no issue the GSXR1000 all the way Laughing

I find the riding position of most modern sports bikes pretty unbearable tbh G, clearly not everyone is the same hence the "a lot" of people comment Thumbs Up .

I can see why a thou might be useful in town but for me it would be an overpowered and expensive torture rack .

If I was getting something for pure town/city stuff, I'd get a supermoto like the Suzy DZR400.

It's tall so you can see over traffic and have a bit more road presence, singles are easy to maintain and the 400 would pack enough punch for blipping between lights etc whilst maintaining decent fuel economy.

Have you ridden the K5/6 1000? Seriously, I'd consider the comfort just a little worse than my 750, which to me is an armchair.

Far more comfy than most bikes i've owned.

Comfiest of my ownership is the CLR, GSXR750 followed by G's 1000. Genuinely fairly comfy, seating position, placement of footpegs... I feel its more upright than most sports.

I haven't ridden one no, sat on a few gsxr1000s in dealers, they are a bit better than the honda/yamaha variants but still not comfortable - it might be better if I had ridden it for a while though Wink .

I'm a rather large and inflexible barsteward though, my CBR is about as sporty as I can tolerate, even then I wouldn't mind a set of bar risers and have just made some mirror extensions - long rides make my knees, arse cheeks and lower back hurt Thumbs Up .

Recently... I had thought about getting bars fitted rather than clip ons Laughing

See, im still quite young (23) and quite flexi Laughing but have a ruined spine courtesy of a ford galaxy... but I found the 1000 pretty comfy, probably a bit more so than the Daytona I had, that was "big" for a sports 6

Still, we are basically debating the least uncomfortable of a series of uncomfortable bikes. Kind of like choosing if you want to be punched in the arm or kicked in the balls, neither is pleasant but one is a tolerable.

I can tolerate my CBR and could probably tolerate a few other sports bikes but I have yet to find anything sporty that is as comfortable as a more upright bike like a naked.

I might add that I am only 25 btw Thumbs Up.

For my commute through town, I didn't find the GSXR any less comfortable than the KTM690.
Same for longer journeys too, I reckon.

Oh and I should add the caveat that I DID get bad upper back/neck ache with a heavy caberg (flip, internal sunvisor, etc) on sports bikes due to the leant over position, while I was find on the KTM.
However a decent helmet (Shoei) sorted it entirely.

Will you go out on the odd run? Maybe a trackday?

If so then why not. Ive a 636 and used it to commute for a year and its been fantastic. Being a sportsbike people do move out of your path and filtering on it is easy.

The bike does want a good run now and again to keep it happy but its not essential.

Guy who parks next to me commutes every day on a (lush) 636, 40 odd mile round trip (Bristol to Bath so almost all town work) and he loves it.
