PostPosted: 21:09 - 15 Jul 2011    Post subject: Tax question please Reply with quote

Evening,

I am hoping some one can help answer my question:

I am going 'up north' on Sunday to pick up a bike which i saw on ebay. I have now insured it and the bike doesnt require m.o.t as less than 3 years old.

However its come to my attention it has no tax and he has declared it sorn. his insurance has run out so he cannot tax it for me.

So I am going to ride it home on sunday (250 miles) but know I will most likely be picked up by ANPR a few times.

Now I know its illegal to ride without tax, its even SORN.

WHAT I would like to know from people who HAVE been in this situation before..Are the cops sympathetic in this scenario? If I show a receipt to show i just bought it, my insurance certificate and my new keepers suppliment slip would I be let on my way.. or am I looking at a guaranteed fine and seize bike etc?

Thank you..

When you go up to buy it, get the v5 off the owner/dealer and take your insurance details with you.
Take them to a post office and get it taxed BEFORE riding it back home.

Buying a tax disc automatically cancels the SORN, so just do what I have said and you can ride it home with tax and not have to worry about plod telling you off.

Hi mate

Thank for your reply,

That was what I had in mind, but because its going to happen on SUnday, post office will be closed.

I have to get it on Sunday I have no option. So I am commited, got my £100 train ticket ffs.

Am I likely to be fined? cops discretion?

If the seller still has the sorn/renewal docs, get the reference number off them and tax it online. You'll have to get them to send the tax disc down, but you'll have to meet a proper pedant for failure to display!

As multijoy said, your best bet will be to do it online.
At least it will be instantly put on the system and won't pop up on any ANPR cameras.

The likelihood of getting done for failure to display the tax disc is highly unlikely unless coppers have telescopic eyes or you get pulled over for something else e.g. speeding, and then they clock that there isn't a tax disc.

I'm sure if you explained your situation to them, they'd let you off with a warning, but these days they're encouraged to dish out fines etc to earn 'credits' rather than show some discretion.

If all else fails, get a van to transport it back home.

ok but because my insurance doesnt start until sunday 7am do i have to wait till then to do it online?

Also I quite clearly wont have the new tax disk to display on the bike but in theory it should be on the national database thus not giving a 'hit' on ANPR yeh?

When I go to do it online will it regocnise that the v5 and my insurance docs will be different names and cause a problem

I trust the chap, im sure he will post it down when he gets it Smile

Sorry 4 all the questions

You could always scan and email you insuance docs and get him to nip to the post office on saturday. My local now accepts printed docs as most companies don't send out hard copies now. They might refuse if they spot the policy starts on Sunday though, but my local taxed the wifes bike with the wrong reg on the certificate

I was able to tax mine with the policy docs on the Wednesday for cover that didn't start until the Saturday. I think as long as the policy has been taken out they're ok with it at the PO.

TBH I'd just ride it home as it is.

Riding home with no tax is not immoral like riding with no insurance. It doesn't effect anyone around.

Who gives a fuck?[/u]

yea I changed my policy to start today, but its still not showing on ASKMID, and I doubt DVLA computers are guna be updated over the weekend.

my plan was to tax it online when i get there with the ref no. on the SORN form but I pretty sure its going to ping back and say no insurance... will just have to wait and see.

I think i would have to get a real dickhead copper to fine me, i will be showing receipt, insurance and new keepers supliment. and ill even print screen and print (assuming seller has printer) the refusal from DVLA because theyre shitty computers dont recognise insurance quick enough.

Also am relying on MCE aka Major Clerical Error to do their bit and actually action the policy lol

fucking hell and its going to hammer it down tommorow.

I think they update them at midnight - when one of my insurances ran out at 12pm it was still showing as insured for the rest of the day, then went to uninsured at midnight (checked it at 12.10am), and that was a Sunday night.

If you have insured it then it's on the MID, if its on there and MOT'd you can tax it over the phone, the vehicle is then taxed if my memory serves right.

Del boy style "tax in post" sticker in the holder.

As said, your best bet would be to try and do it online or over the phone. If you get a really keen copper he will probably take the bike off you and you will be fined too. Its a chance you take, up to you at the end of the day mate.

Don't bank on it till you have checked Ask Mid Its not unknown for ins co's to forget to upload data.....

So if its not there, then you can't tax it online or over the phone.

Also if you tax it online you are still riding without tax, as the 5 day rule only comes into play when you are renewing last years ins and not when a bike has been sorn.
