Any one know of a cheap crossing to Sardinia with a bike and one passenger? Would like to leave from France.

The best I am getting is round the £145 mark return. It's a ten hour crossing. The same time of a ten hour crossing from Italy to Greece is 34 Euros single. So a return will be less than double.

How come the same amount of time crossing. Is nearly three time's as much?

That's probably the best you#ll get. IIRC Patras to Bari is 19hours, but it's a much more popular route, hence the price difference.

How about going via Corsica? Looks like there may be cheap options to Corsica from mainland France, then a decent ride down Corsica and a hop across to Sardinia from the south? Probably won't be significantly cheaper but will cut down the ferry time and offer some alternative roads.

At the moment there could be a plan change. Totally different. Hook a bike trailer to the back of the car. Load that up, and drive down to Faro in Portugal. Stay there two week and ride round, then drive back. That way Bridget can come with me. No crossing to speak of. And as easy as falling off a log to do the trip. Just looking now at a few travel agent web site's to book a holiday. A week down a week back and two week's there. A month in all.

Let you know how I get on.

Doesn't sound like as much fun. Does Bridget not ride or go pillion?

Rather than driving all the way down you could get the ferry to Bilbao or Santender, then ride through spain to get to your destination in Portugal.

That way you'll get more bike time, but significantly less than riding all the way from the UK

Done it and came back. Staid with a friend in Spain for a few day' on the way down. Two night's in Madrid. To see the sight's. Weather in faro was hot and the hotel was cheap. Car and trailer meant that we could pack every thing. Done a lot for riding around. And seen quite a few thing, We are getting in to this way of travel. The only down side is the Chanel crossing. £147 for car and trailer. Against £40 return for just a bike. But hell it's only money.

Off to one of the Greek island in May same format. Car trailer bike. two week's there a week out and a week back.
