Forks Flushing/Cleaning

Hello;

Just took my forks off and tipped them over.. right hand fork fluid red-ish colour slight bit of greyness... the left hand one however was just pure grey sludge.. terrible. Does this mean I need to replace a seal of some sorts on the left hand one, has moisture/crap etc seeped in? Why would it be considerably dirtier than the right one... could the fork seal have gone before and a garage only changed the oil in that fork when they replaced the seal but left the other one?

Btw what is good to use to flush the forks with, I used some new fork oil but could do with something more plentiful and cheaper...

You could use some solvent to flush them out, anything that will evaporate and not leave a residue. It's a good idea to clear out as much of the old oil as possible. I like to strip mine and clean each part when changing the oil.

fit both new seals and dustcaps if needed,clean any crud/corrosion where the seals fit carefully.
Theres no point doing one then having to do the other a few miles later.I usually clean and grease the outside edge of the seal and the steel retaing clip.If you dont grease the clips then they cause corrosion of the ally legs.

Thanks for the replies guys, much appreciated . I don't have a vice nor a nice big bench so not going to take the forks fully apart just yet. They're still upside down draining away, spent yesterday swapping the rear shock and couldn't move on to the forks to finish off. Would paraffin be suitable to flush with?

Parrafins fine,just clean it off .Make sure you dont damage the forks if you need to lever the seals out.If the old seals are tight its worth paying a local bike garage to pop em out and put the new ones in.
