How long do 600 bandit engines generally last for?

looking at one with 53 k on the clock. i know maintenance is important but most engines tend to have a 'bang' mileage.

Thanks

Harry.

Usually they seem good for 100K miles if serviced and looked after, mines got 41k and the engines like new inside (Know this because did the headgasket recently) depending on the age though the frames can suffer from rust and oil cooler pipes if kept outside the linkages can rust around the braided hose.

Make sure it's been properly looked after, though: mine only had ~34k on the clock, but was a proper heap. Looked OK cosmetically, but near enough everything on it was shagged.

I had the 12 at 76k, my mate Laurie had the 6 at 89k and only chopped it in for a bmw gs because he got a good deal on one and it was comfier for instructing on.

Maintanence is key. It doesn't have to have a fully written up service history to be a well maintained bike. Mine are certainly maintained regardless of cost but I only have receipts for parts as I do it all myself.

Both the above bikes ran very well at that mileage and with no issues.

I wouldnt say most bikes have a bang mileage. Loads of engines dont get the chance to build up a super high mileage cause the rest of the bike rots around it. As said, 50 odd K means very little in engine terms if its a well maintained bike. However, look very carefull at everthing else. All bearings, forks and seals, rust, make sure all electrics work as they should etc...

Suzuki engines themselves are pretty reliable and should cope with that sort of mileage, with regular and proper servicing (read: not just changing the oil!). My k1 GSXR 600 is approaching 50k shortly without missing a beat from the motor. It's the other bits that can cause issues, items like the Reg/Rec can fail, electrical connectors can get corroded, bearing in the wheels, steering and suspension have a finite life as do things like the fork and brake seals, so they are all things that are worth bearing in mind even if you can't check them pre purchase.

But all that of course is not just exclusive to Suzuki, Things to watch out for on Suzukis are the paper mache bolts they use! They do round off, they do snap and they do cause problems! I had two rocker cover bolts round off on me when doing my valve clearance which wasn't very nice! Crying or Very sad

That said don't be put off because every high mileage bike from any manufactor will likely have similar issues, its a compromise of having an older, higher mileage machine, you may have to get your hands dirty or be prepared to pay someone else to do it.

Just my 2p experience of high mileage Suzukis Thumbs Up

If it sounds okay and you believe it's been regularly serviced... high mileage shouldn''t be a worry. Dealers give you buttons for relately new bikes with 'high miles'. For example, apparently my '05 Speed Triple 1050 with 27k was high mileage!!! fukthatshite.

I've got three bikes at the mo and the one I use daily is about to trip 56k on the clock and it just as good as the other two (29k and 17k). As everyone says the engine is likely to last longer than the rest of the bike.

My beemer has 70k on the clocks and still runs sweet.

I had an FJ1200 with similar mileage and that also ran fine.

Keep up on the maintenance and most larger capacity bikes should last all eternity.

My riding school had cg125s with over 80k on them which ran perfectly.

Those oil-cooled engines can go on for ever with proper maintenance. Provided you change the 10/40 semi every 5000 miles or so and check the clearances every 10000 miles there is no reason why they won't go round the clock. I had a GSX750F that made it to 90k before the rest of it disintegrated. The engine was still going strong...

As a previous poster said, it is the rest of it you need to worry about...

however, the rest of the bike will rot into the ground unless you take a bit of care with it.

True.. Thumbs Up

I got shot of my Bandit 600 at 56k miles, had it from 18k and serviced every 3,700miles, nothing special on oil. Engine was using max to min between services when I parted it in, but the reason for sale was the rest of the mechanics, the rear shock was shot, the front disks needed changing again, and the rotbox exhaust "couldn't be patched any more".

In short it needed £1k spent, and I wanted to get a CBF in 6 months time anyway, when Honda offered me £600 against a shiny new CBF, I bit their arm off and p/x'd it.
