So coming home from work the other day, along the a13 (canvey end), was daydreaming abit when went past two police bikes at the side of the road with a hand held speed gun.

Was maybe going faster than should have been, however they didn't get on and chase.

My question is do they have to pull you over there and then to do you for speeding or is simply noting down your reg and catching up with you at a later date good enough????

Not required to pull you over. Just keep an eye on the post for the next 3 weeks or so and see if an NIP pops through the letter box.

NIP has to be sent out within 14 days with a reasonable expectation of arriving within 14 days, and once posted it has been deemed to have been served, but allowing for issues with the royal mail, or other legitimate reasons, you have to be realistic and allow 3 to 4 weeks to be on the safe side.

It is quite permissable to just make a note of your registration number, time and speed recorded and follow it up later.

That said, in those situations you are usually safe unless you were pulled. Especially if they were on bikes.

Not so much any more, now that you can be forced to incriminate yourself.

I thought that this was common knowledge? It's exactly the same as a mobile speed camera just motorcycle mounted.

If you were going too fast, you very well may have been caught, you just have to wait and see if you get an NIP in the next fortnight.

Hope you don't, good luck! Thumbs Up!

As a general rule, they would have come after you and stopped you there and then, so I wouldn't worry too much. With a handheld speed gun, they tend to come after you and show you the evidence at the time. The speed vans record vehicle details for NIPs to be sent out.

You cannot generalise! I quite often did not bother stopping someone at the time, simply did the follow up later in the day, and even now I know a lot of my former colleagues don't bother, just record details and again follow up with the NIP's later

Do they get the same amount of credits for sending out an NIP as they do for a roadside pull?

Noticed recently that the A13 and the Bow Flyover are getting a lot of attention from the police with speed guns, A13 is a bugger as you have 30,40 & 50mph sections so you need to be alert. I try to avoid it if I can as I hate the road, always lots of idiots weaving in and out all over the place.

out of interest, what are the yellow vans with crash cages around their front windows? I went past one at 6am this morning, possibly going a tad over the limit [hey the roads are dead at that time!] never heard of a camera van tagging someone on opposite road whilst driving along but wondered

EDIT: it was yellow and black checked

Fool you for daydreaming & not being alert. If the situation had been different, you might have been involved in an accident

it does go to show that its easy to fall into the trap of only looking at the vehicles immediately in front of you, and not look ahead into the distance

Bad luck fella, now I'm on 3 points and only allowed 6 I'm very aware of just how many things people do actually do that could potentially be worth another 3. Riding home after a long day at work doesn't help matter either. If you didnt know, which I'm sure you do, here is the place to go for anything like this.

Thanks, that was sort of useful but not really.

Can some one advise on this, the nip i got has not stated about any photographic evidence nor does it state how fast i was going?

You're done. They don't need a photo and they don't need to give a speed. They just need to say you were speeding. Man up and send it back. It is just one of those things we all go through eventually.
