Ok, so im not 17 till Feb next year but my dad said although we probs cant buy one yet, you'd better look for something. So i've fallen for the Honda NSR 125. My mates are saying to do full test and get a 600, but i dunno if i'll have the money for that... Defo taking full test though...

Anyways, i was just thinking what you think about them, i've only seen 1 once and that was today, i thought it was sexy but that's JMO.

I had one a loved it. They are a 2 stroke which need a bit more care and attention than a 4, but can be fairly easily derestricted so BHP can be increased to outside learner legal range.

Lots of people would say they are not a great first bike and they would have a point..... They are pretty nippy, and can catch a novice out if your not careful (but then so can a 'ped).

They are also getting on a bit now (not been made for getting on 10 years or so) so finding a good one might be tricky.

This forum was born from an NSR forum so a lot of the older members have had an NSR at some point. The noobs hate em though Wink

Yeah i've noticed that the oldest is probably a 2003 plate, and they have problems like piston's and rings etc.. Well i would really enjoy one as like you said, they can be adjusted to out of learner legal range.

I think if i found a good one, i'd have to take Very good care of it as it one day might be the last one to run, ever Very Happy

Im not 17 for ages so still on the look out but i think they're pretty bikes.... Very Happy

Get one,
I had an 03 they are great bikes, you will just be another mong on a 600 who doesn't know how to ride it if you jump straight on one.
NSR's are bulletproof, have plenty of poke derestricted (which isn't strictly legal as your meant to be 14.6bhp at 17, but I doubt there are even any non import NSR's left that aren't restricted anyway)
They are great bikes to learn your first bike maintenance on aswell since they are so simple.

I could bang on about how good they are all day but I cba to be honest, just get one.. Thumbs Up

Well i can't really ask for a better answer than that xD I agree with you about the 600 bit. it would be true. Especially as it would be my first geared bike and biggest yet. plus i want to experience different bikes through-out my life so i might aswell Very Happy

Thanks for the reply though. Useful stuff dude! Very Happy

You just missed out on buying my 94 Honda NSR R Evil or Very Mad

https://img69.imageshack.us/img69/5741/dscf6018v.jpg

I've had that one since 2006 even though I have a full licence. I love the sound and smell of the smokers and the learners of today don't know what they are missing out on with all that bland 4 stroke chinese tat (Honda and Yamaha included) that is being shipped about.

NSR's are probably the most reliable sports 2 stroke but they still require fully synthetic 2 stroke oils and none of this k & n filter crap. They are just as reliable as a 4 stroke if you treat it right and the build quality is a million times better than new bikes today. My ex bike was 17 years old and had no rust on it.

When you buy one take time to look for a good one. The guy who bought mine said that he had looked at lots of 2000 - 2003 bikes and my 1994 bike was in much better nick. Parts are generally cheap and fairly easy to get although don't break the fairings as some parts are a nightmare to get hold of. Don't take the owners word when they say it has been rebuilt.......they all say that......you want hard proof like reciepts.

NSR's probably are not the best tool to do mod 1 with as they have the turning circle of a supertanker and the riding position will just make it that bit harder. I would buy a good one then rent a YBR etc for your test.

When you pass prepare for derestricted smiles Mr. Green

This, RS 125's are slightly faster and nicer looking, and I've rode both.

Slightly faster but need a rebuild twice as often........Nice bikes but is that tiny bit of extra power worth the hassle. Each to their own on looks but the Chesterfield RS's always floated my boat Thumbs Up I've ridden more 2 strokes than I care to remember.

Gutted I sold it to be honest, spent many an hour making it look good.....and then there's all that quality time spent rebuilding the engine so it purred like a kitten but when it hit the powerband it sounded like a wasp on steroids Twisted Evil

I got what I wanted for it but the garage now feels rather empty Thumbs Down

I've had my 01 nsr for 2 years and I love it to bits,I could have done my das straight away and jumped on a larger bike but I had a couple of little strokers when I was 16/17 and I guess I wanted to relive my youth, and tbh for the riding I do around here it's quick enough,at least it is now it's de-restricted (thanks alot G!) I did a das last year and have decided to keep my nsr,it's reasonably cheap to run and has never let me down once in 2 years, allways starts first push of the button and still brings a smile to my face every time I ride her but I do look after it and she's garaged, treat 'em right and they wont let you down, just don't buy a lemon.I looked at alot of bikes before I bought mine and ended up spending around £500 more than planned, there are alot of tatty bikes out there that have not been loved but there are good'uns out there just be patient.
They are reasonably practical bikes for nippy little 2 strokes but they do have a few characteristics which can be annoying but thats more down to the riding position, like for instance visibility in town is not as good as a cg/ybr and the turning circle is quite large. It is alot more comfortable at 50+ once the wind takes the weight of your wrists,so not ideal for alot of town riding but not that bad,for nipping around little b roads it's so much fun.
And spares are cheap and easily available (davidsilver parts are great for genuine nsr bits) and being a 2 stroke it's really easy to learn your way around, get yourself a basic tool kit and a haynes manual and you'l be surprised how easy the basic stuff is to do!

Not this, RS 125's are a bag of shite that blow up every few miles because teenagers can't look after them.

Edited for accuracy. Thumbs Up

And to be fair, this applies:

I haven't heard anyone say that they are crap. everyone's said they are brilliant bikes so it's sounding promising. Im not that fussed about the turning circle because at the end of the day you lean more than turn, just if you need to dodge something you wont have the extra space im guessing. but i'll get used to it Razz I think that are reasonably priced aswell. for about £1,200 i'd probs pay that. I dont want to hop on a bigger bike. im not too fussed about that. like, if i was given the chance to though i would take it, but i dont want something that i will probs drop in a few weeks.

Love my NSR 125. It's pretty great. Handles well for what it is. As said above, they're bulletproof. You can't go wrong. Break the fairings and you'll regret it though.

I've had mine (04) now for 3 months, honestly compared to the YBR I done my CBT on I cacked it when I first rode it and hit the powerband. After a few hours though and a change of underwear the smile hasn't wore off! The RS is another choice, but less reliable and also as someone said sounds like an angry wasp in the can.

Fairly easy to maintain also, a slight pain getting to the oil but for all the time you would need to do it doesn't make much of a difference. If you plan on getting a 400-600 sportsbike later too I'd say the NSR is a better stepping stone too. Buy one you won't regret it!

haha. i'll be cacking it. from a DNA 50 with barely any power, to an NSR with WAY over about 5 x the power.. Im gonna need about £50 when i get it, cus the first 3 days will be pure riding!! Twisted Evil

My mate has an RS125. they're fantastic bikes, but Aprilia were so focused on performance they forgot about reliabilty like you said. Although IMO Honda's ticked every box Very Happy

What's the MPG like on them? Any good??

MPG I couldn't say for sure. I hear it's between 30-40mpg or so though. I still love to just go out and ride around for the sake of riding. I do a hour or two every day just because I love the bike. Great stuff.

The NSR was/ is my first bike. Didn't take long to get used to it at all.

Whilst the Honda may be MORE reliable, the fact of the matter is it's still a 2 stroke and they are all unreliable by rep. So the NSR is the lesser of the two evils!! Laughing My RS was actually fine, but I rebuilt everything on it! The RS is more like a sports bike in terms of size and weight......to me, the NSR just looks too skinny! MPG on the RS was about 30-35, derestriced, so the NSR might be around the same.....terrible considering I get 47 round town on the TCat! Don't forget Castrol TTS 2 Stroke oil (about £15 per bottle) which needs topping up every few weeks.

You're gonna hate this bit of advise, but I'm gonna give it anyway........you're gonna do your test, right? Forget NSR, RS, Mito etc. Get a CG125 or something similar to learn on. These little upright commuters are so easy to ride and it's what you'll be learning on anyway......Not the sexiest bikes in the world, but GREAT for learners. I see you talking a lot about reliability....look no further than a CG!

You will worry about the turning circle when your doing your mod 1, i'd like to see a knee down at 5 Mph Very Happy

If you want a NSR then get one, i loved mine and they are a great bike for making you want to get out and ride. Personally I ride smallish bikes because i prefer them and they generally don't put my licence at risk while still having run.

I'd recommend Motul 710 2 stroke for the NSR, well recommended from the NSR 250 bods too.
