Just passed my theory 2 hours ago (yeaah!) and I will be doing my CBT next month. I've been asked to wear boots (without metal toecaps), not trainers. Since I don't own any, I thought I would go ahead and buy some motorbike boots for when I start riding. I'll be doing my mod 1 and 2 but will be restricted to 33bhp.

So what type of boots do you wear? I'm looking at some TCX Competizione RS Boot from GeorgeWhite that have been reduced from £250 to £100, plus I have a £10 voucher. They have mainly good reviews on the interwebz. I will be buying an SV650, not exactly a super sport. Would race boots be a bit OTT? I'm planning on wearing leather trousers, textile jacket (gloves and helmet of course) and will be wearing the whole lot every time I ride the bike.

Well done on your theory test Thumbs Up

I've got Tuzo ankle boots for riding around town, going to college and anywhere fairly local where I'll have to get off the bike and walk. Also have kevlar jeans which I usually wear with these boots

I also have Diadorra Xtreme race boots which I wear with my leathers. These offer much more protection in an accident and are really comfortable when riding but because of the plastic armour they're not so comfortable for walking in and they squeak Mad
They're also not good for riding in the rain as the vents mean you get soggy patches on your socks Rolling Eyes

I'd suggest you think about the type of riding you do. Mainly commuting? Weekend blasts? Touring?

When I first started I tried to get one set of bike gear that would do me for the whole year but I don't know anyone who is able to do that.
Something that will keep you warm in the winter will make you sweat like a pig in the summer.
Something cool enough for the summer will mean you'll freeze after 10min on the bike in the winter.
Winter gloves are too hot for the summer and there's nothing worse than wearing summer gloves in the cold rain during winter, even with hot-grips.

Most bikers I know have a spring/summer set and a autumn/winter set...unless they park the bike in a garage when it gets cold and wait until the sun comes out again Folded arms

Comfy boots are what you want, if they fit and dont piss your feet off, then wear them. Thumbs Up

Comfort and fit before looks.

I wear trainers... I know, shoot me.. but I find boots tight and uncomfortable, dont fit too great after my ankles got smashed into pieces.

Doovy has boots that I like the look of, they may fit...but they look like trainers with a bit more ankle protection.

Well, my boots were really cheap. They only cost me £40 and i think they're Great. They look good, Really comfy and warm.

Got it from J&S in Kimberley, near Nottingham, but they do have an online shop, and 11 other stores nation-wide. https://www.jsaccessories.co.uk

Also that's a BIG price drop Thumbs Up but i wouldn't worry about going OTT. I'm on a Gilera DNA 50 which barely has any power and top speed but i still wear Boots, Leather trousers, textile jacket, gloves and a helmet like you're going to. Protection's always the best! Thumbs Up

Would you feel like a tit for wearing them? No gear is OTT if it is comfortable and will provide you with protection in the event of an accident. And hey, if you can find some good ones for sub £100 that you like then go for them!

Extremely comfy and light and only cost me £79.99 I usually get two years out of boots before their completely shagged. I can see these lasting longer i think.

I wear Alpinestars S-MX4 and S-MX5. They are comfy and they don't look too bad imho. Cannot fault them.

I have some old Frank Thomas winter ones. They're knackered. They keep my feet cool in the Summer because of the holes in them. And one zip is broken.

Thumbs Up

British Army cold weather boots or German Jack boots.

Both about £25, and much more useful than bike boots.

daytona bandits for everyday riding (gym, work and back etc..)

https://www.brandedbiker.co.uk/img/products/daytona_bandit_boot.jpg

sidi vertigo (mega) goretex for track and blasting

https://lidsdirect.co.uk/WebRoot/StoreDaily/Shops/eshop193014/4A0D/2417/F822/7E42/481F/C0A8/0ADD/3040/Sidi_Vertigo_Mega_Goretex.jpg

daytonas are probably the best comfortable boot i've ever worn, but they have a pricetag not for the weak hearted Very Happy good enough to ride to work and comfy enough to wear throughout the day (im sitting here wearing em at the mo) had nearly 3 years and still going strong, no signs of wearing out.

both thoroughly tested in awful rainy conditions and the goretex has earnt its stripes.. no leaks

my sidis have started to click but a quick spray of silicone spray sorted my dads squeaky rst's so i'll probably give that a go at some point.

Hi

Find some that are comfy, affordable and easy to put on and off.

I have some Sidis (I think) for occasional use (ie, playing silly buggers on a track) but while they are no doubt protective they are a pain to put on and off and not really comfy to walk in.

For normal use I have some like these. No doubt less protective but they are cheap, easy to put on in a hurry, pretty waterproof (well, were when new - need some new ones soon) and comfy enough to walk in.

All the best

Keith

Just to offer my experience - about 2 years ago I went looking for new boots. I was willing to pay whatever for boots that were comfortable. I tried them all on, from £70 Hein Gericke ones to £300 race boots. I was replacing my old Alpinestar S-MX boots which were like slippers, but the newer S-MXs just didn't do it for me. In the end I got some Sidi Vertigos, which I really like.

The moral of the story is to sit and try on as many as you can before committing. Cheap, uncomfortable boots are a false economy.

I wear a pair of Akito Vipers for everyday summer use and have a pair of Sidi Black Rain for Winter, Akito are only cheap but very comfy and waterproof for general commuting everyday use.

Well most textile jackets come with removable liners, so in Winter they are nice and warm, yet once removed in summer they are cool.
I even find my textile cooler in summer than my leather jacket.

Will agree with the gloves comment.

You have to remember that in colder weather you need to layer up, with thin layers and not just rely on one bulky layer Thumbs Up

I have the boots you are thinking about. If they don't have them in your size then try another George White nearby if possible. Or get them to call another branch and they may get some brought down.

They are great boots for me. Haven't come off with them on yet but they feel good, fit well and look good. Personally I wear them under kevlar jeans but I think they would look good over but its a 50 so I don't want to look too much off a tit Laughing

Beware though, they are known for squeaking. I have been told that silicone spray does the job. Mine only squeak after I wear them in the rain for a few days after then it goes away again.

Thumbs Up
