 Posted: 20:45 - 25 Jul 2011 Post subject: VIN Number help!!! |
 |
|
I have just brought a bike from ebay, im having a few issues
When i brought it, the seller said that the V5 was with this, the bike came with a spare frame.
On the V5, the VIN number is actually only 8 digits long, on looking on the bike, the only number i can find is on the right hand of the steering collum and says
APRILIA FM 02954397
this is the only number on the frame
On the spare Frame, it has engraved on the right hand steering collum
S2S0Z EST 010M 02164128
on the sticker also on the right hand side of the frame, it also has no VIN listed, it just states
Aprilia SPA
VIA G GALILEI 1
13.5 KW
30033
NOA E Italy
EU-DGM
Does anyone have any idea why the frame and the bike has no 17 digit VIN, and if this was normal for the 1991 futura 125?
the reason why i am asking is because the V5 that came with the bike, actually has the VIN listed as the frame number for the 'FRAME' that came with the bike,
not the frame that the bike is actually using!! so a nightmare, as i need the VIN to find out the bikes details from aprilia. I know i can register the bike without this as the DVLA will appoint a Q plated registration, but i dont want to lose the bikes history. I know there must be a way to get the VIN, Aprilia italy, whom i have spoken to, say the VIN is in the place i am looking, but the 8 digit number i believe is the engine number??
Also does anyone know of an AF1 1991 workshop manual in pdf format to download or a cheap one to buy?
thanks |

Hi
Probably down to the age. Aprilia UK have moved around a lot since 1991 and probably nobody there who worked there when the Futura was new (maybe the MD).
Does your bike have twin round lights? Does it have 40mm forks. Does it have a front mudguard with a metal strip on each side leading from the forks to the mudguard?
By the way, part number for the oil tank is 82 30 860.
All the best

i have the rectangle single light at the front, no metal strip and my forks are bigger than that
the bike i have is the same as this picture,
it has a black mudguard, not sure if this is an aftermarket part. I also have a fairing kit that came with the bike which is the same as in your picture with the twin headlight

Hi
Pretty much. Sport Pro is just a limited edition later shape Futura (think the Sport Pro had a smaller carb in some markets). Sport Pro was painted in yellow black and white.
The later Futuras did home some changes. Forks as already mentioned. Seat units were changed (they lost the silver bits under the seat, and the seat plastics went further forward). Also the frame changed slightly around where the bracing bar goes across the frame.
All the best

Hi
Various places can supply a proof of age for a bike which is accepted by the DVLA. One who might be able to do it for an Italian bike is North Leicester Motorcycles.
Once you have the proof of age you need an MOT for the bike (on the chassis number, NOT the registration number), insurance on the chassis number (which you can normally only get for a limited time) and then take all the docs to the DVLA, pay the first registration fee and the first years road tax and wait for the docs. They might want to inspect the bike (I have registered 3 bikes and a car and on one of those they have wanted to inspect it).
There is a more complicated system for newer bikes but think yours is old enough to go through the older system.
All the best
