YZF600R 1st to 2nd gear clunk

1st to 2nd change on my Cat is a bit of a mare!!! Obviously there is further to go due to having to also pass neutral, but there always seems to be quite an annoying, and hard clunk. Strange thing is, on some occasions, there is barely any noise. It doesn't pop out of gear, as I know is common on these bikes......so is the clunk down to poor shifting technique or should I be thinking there's a tranny problem. Or, is this normal??!! It's definitely more of a problem the higher up in the rev range I run. Any help much appreciated

Never had a thundercat so cant advise you if its normal or not, however, i did ride a v-strom for a while and that had an awful clonk that was apparently an endearing feature of the model. To get to the point, i found that putting some pre-load on the gear lever just prior to shifting really improved things.

i think its the same gearbox as the fazer,which is known for being awefully clunky

just gotta live with it haha

I get the same problem if i go from N to 1st on my bike. Not even moving so cant be the chain.

Got used to my honda cbf 125 doing it but now this clunk is beefier so i kind of like it

Normal. Chain tension may help, but it'll always be a bit on the agricultural side.

I have this with the CBR. Problem quickly gets worse the higher in the rev range I am. I've pulled over a few times thinking my gearbox just went flying out or something.

Preloading the gear lever seemed to make some difference. Gonna try adjusting the chain also later this week. You know what it's like when you get a new bike/car.......you listen out for everything wondering if it's normal or not !!!

Be ultra positive with the gear change as well. Really firm and precise.
That said 90's Yamaha gearboxes are known to break easily.

Clunking is normal, there's nothing you can do to change it, other than fitting cross cut gears like BMW bikes have.
