why do cars drop back after being overtaken?

cars going along near enough to speed limit, say 45mph..., I overtake at a slightly higher speed - not excessive and some cars will then drop back to 30mph, as if they are in shock.

it makes me thing something is wrong, and im not doing anything unsafe.


it happens very often!

I don't know but i'd have to guess that they are not confident in judging the speed of a motorbike, or the stopping distance that they need. That could add up to the cautious driving maybe Thinking

probs cus they're thinking they're the shizz going at such 'Outrageous' speeds and then they get over taken by a biker and go all embarrassed and cry cus they have 4 wheels Smile

But seriously, i just think they wanna stay out the way and stay back so they don't hit you or something....

They are helping you overtake, as them slowing means your overtake is done quicker.

Its the universe balancing itself out, as you go faster the surrounding vehicles are slowed down to compensate.
Don't worry about it, its totally normal.

It's not them slowing down, it's the awesome acceleration of your bike, and the limitless grip in your tyres causing the World to revolve backwards in relation to you !!!

This is one of those like, Why do old people drive so slowly?

They probably didn't used to, so why now? They can't be scared, or they never would have got a car when in their 20s etc..

Cos even asshole drivers like myself that'll happily sit 2 feet from someone's bumper (if I believe they're not going fast enough) don't like being too close behind motorbikes. It's just going to be a bit too splattery and gross if it goes wrong.

Drivers often assume that motorcyclists can fall off at any moment for no apparent reason. Reading some of the posts on here, that's not an entirely dumb assumption. Laughing

It often amazes me how a lot of drivers, young, middle-aged and old ever passed their tests. I'm far far far from racist or sexist, but the absolute worst are Asian females. They are utterly clueless behind the wheels of cars...

Isn't this contrary to the highway code? The idea being to maintain a constant speed so the overtaker has no surprises, i.e. if something suddenly appears in the opposite direction and they try to drop back, they don't find that you've slowed and are in their escape route.

Highway code says:

I imagine "if necessary" is open to a fair bit of interpretation.

Not sure where it says that in the highway code - but it would seem sensible, at least when the other road user is pretty 'committed'.
[edit, ok seems the highway code agrees - when we're talking 30' for lorry that it's harder to see around etc, it's probably going to help a bit more too.]

It was a case of a take your foot off the throttle a bit; at least stop accelerating, rather than actually brake.

It's because a lot (and I mean a lot) of bikers will happily overtake then drop into the 2 second gap left to the car in front. Some people like having that gap and it's fecking annoying when someone performs a blistering overtake only to then get in the fecking way.

Bikers privilege? Seriously though, if you can get right past a line of traffic you would, but when your continuing overtake is truncated because of something coming the other way, surely you have to pull in? Failing to do so could be a little messy, or a little breaky/painy, no?

Absolutely. But that's why cars slow down and create the gap again. They're (we're) not all homicidal maniacs looking to kill every biker on the road.
