PostPosted: 13:07 - 26 Jul 2011    Post subject: At Mcdonald on sunday Reply with quote

I rode my bike on Sunday for short riding in the evening.
I found a McDonald and went in.
When I was making order for soft cream and fanta, there were two young(20ish) men from maybe SE asia in tidy fashion(long pants and nice shoes) waiting for their meal sitting.
While I was ordering, they picked up their meal(potato, burger, drink) and went back to their table, then one of them came back to the counter and tried to request ketchup in not fluent Japanese.
Then the male sub-manager(40ish) picked only one ketchup and gave it to him. He said "Only one ketchup...?" in not fluent Japanese.
Then the sub-manager said "You have to say you want ONE or TWO ketchup before hand! DO YOU UNDERSTAND!?" and gave him another ketchup.
At this point I was annoyed at the sub-manager.
At least in Japan, it is the common sense that clerk ask customer "How many ketchup would you like?".
But I didn't tell it and brought my meal to the table next to the nice young guys. They were chatting in Malaysian or Thai but not loudly.
I thought they must be nice guys from what I felt.
So I finished my soft cream and went to the sub-manager at the counter.
Me "Excuse me, I have one thing I'd like to talk to you"
Sub "What is it?"
Me "When the customers over there asked for ketchup, your response to them was totally inappropriate as a clerk"
Then the sub-manager started bowing repeatedly like a grasshopper saying "I'msorryI'msorryI'msorryI'msorryI'm...."
Me "Your bowing and sorry grate on my nerves. Are you really feeling you are sorry?
It's sure that Mcdonald is not a restaurant with high average customer spend but I've never seen any clerk like you before.
How dare you talk like that to customers from oversea? Do you say the same things to Japanese and westerner?
I request you to apologize to them face to face."
Sub "I don't respond like that to ordinary customers. To tell the truth, they are trouble makers to our shop for a long time.
That's why I couldn't help responding to them like that.
Me "Oh I see. I will personally talk to them and wanna see if they really are trouble makers."
Sub "Ah no. No.NO. Please don't do that! no. It's the relation between them and us, and it has nothing to do with you.
No. Please DON'T"
Me "Do you have any right to stop me talking to them personally? ok. I will make a complaint about this later."
But I stopped talking to them in the shop.
After about 20 minutes later, they finished eating and went out of the shop.
I finished drinking the large fanta grape and went out too.
They were about to unlock their bicycles.
I rarely use my English in actual scene but I felt like talking to them.

Me "Excuse me? Do you often come to this McDonald?"
One of them "Nan de su ka?"
Me "Yoku kotira ni wa korarerun de su ka?"
He "Sorry, in English please."
Me "Do you often come to this McDonald?"
He "No.This is the first time we came here. Why?"
Me "I felt that sub-manager in this shop's response to you when you asked for Ketchup was not appropriate.
He was saying to you "Please say if you want one ketchup or two ketchup in advance! Do youunderstand?",
I think he should say "How many ketchup would you like?".so I made a complaint.
Then that guy told me that you are long time trouble makers to this shop, and that's why he
responded to you like that."
He "Oh really? Oh I can't believe it.. Is it wrong to ask for ketchup in japanese Mcdonald?"
Me "No. Not at all. Now I understand that he was lying to me. I want to say sorry for what happened to you
this time."
He "Thank you for explaining to me. Arigato"

I started to walking toward my bike but turned into the shop again.
Me "Excuse me, may I talk to the sub-manager?"
Female "He's receiving order for drive through now. Please wait"
Sub "May I help you?"
Me "After I went out, I personally talked to them in English.
They were saying they came here for the first time.
And they asked me if asking for ketchup in Japanese Mcdonald is a bad thing...
So what you told me was not truth I can say."
Sub "No. You can not say that from what they told you. They may be lying to you.
And why is it that you are not the victim and you stick to complain?
I understand if they complain to me. This isn't your business.
This conversation is making our customer in cars waiting for ordering and it's annoyance for us."
Me "I felt unpleasant when I saw your responce which isn't appropriate for a cleark. That's why."
Sub "We don't have a manual for such thing"
Me "Don't you understand such an easy thing without Manual?
I read your name plate Mr***, I will make a complaint via internet later."
Now I went out of the shop.
Nice guys were still there.
Me "That guy was still saying that you are the trouble makers. That guy is totally crazy.
I'm gonna make a complaint to HQ via email. And I want to say sorry for what happened to you this time"
He "That's ok.Thank you.Arigato"
Me "Bye"

I sent claim message to HQ at the night on Sunday.
Tonight when I came home I found a response from HQ.
In short, they were saying sorry, they reprimanded the shop manager severely,
they reported the related section and try to better the education.
(I was a little bit relieved that HQ wasn't saying I was a little bit too far thing)

What annoyed me most was that, I find some Japs who responds very roughly in Japanese
to a customer who isn't good at Japanese.
I want to say "Try to communicate in English then!!"

I suspect that Central area have many car industories, so sub-manager might be annoyed at
some of foreign customer, but if he respond like that to all foreigner, it's fail.
And I bet that kind of person won't say the same thing to westerner.

When I traveled in Germany alone when I was 24, when I ordered an orange juice, they gave me
Cola. They said "Sechzig Mark" for a bread at Kiosk. All of my anger might have come from
this experience.
I felt I must say something in this situation drinking Fanta grape.

Every time you post you always come across as the nicest guy in the world. Laughing
Well done for sorting out the relations there, he might think twice every time he responds to a foreigner now.

If you ever want a visit from a BCF member, I’d love to visit Japan sometime. Smile Thumbs Up

4 minutes wasted.

Seriously, you spent all that effort getting involved in someone elses issue (despite being good natured), then you came back and spent 20 minutes typing this up to basically inform us that McDonalds is full of rude ignorent staff??

HOLD THE PRESS, SHOCK NEWS Laughing

Wonder what could have been achieved in the meantime during this entire hours worth of exercise? Just saying like....

And you've used your time to spectacularly good use doing...what? Telling someone else what they should have done? Oh dear, it seems you've caught a bad dose of irony.

What was had was a McDonald's staff exercising a typical example of Japanese racism/xenephobia/discrimination (it's endemic out there) and Kawashima san taking a stand on it. That courage is rarer than rocking-horse shit over here, never mind in Japan where that kind of discrimination is institutionalised. Remember the grief he had over lending money to his boss?

Most fcukers talk the talk, Kawashima walks the walk.

Nahhh, in all honesty, I think you guys probably know him a lot better. Dont have the foggyest who he is.

Fair play for standing up for them. Just thought it was an English chap randomly defending two tourists for only getting 1 ketchup instead of 2 Laughing

Can't say I know of racism in McDonalds, but given the staff quality level, I can't see them being the most dignified either Laughing

Makes my comments kinda redundant really Embarassed Laughing

You're wording in English makes me laugh, it's not so much wrong, but out of place, and just makes for amusing sentences!

Nicely done, Kawashima-san. Thumbs Up
I can't stand unnecessary impoliteness in that sort of situation. The sub-manager guy was being a total arse.
