If so what do you do for a living?

I work as a draughtman and while I have been for the last 4 years, I feel I'm in the wrong job! I'm more of a hands on person rather than sitting in office everyday at 8 - 5. I love engineering, and I love practical work ie fixing, investigating, fault finding, maintaining etc. I'm qualified to HNC level in Mechanical Engineering but I feel I have wasted my education on some rubbish job!

Have you ever done something and regret it or do you love your job?

Also any pointers for a 25 yr old when looking for a career change?

27 and doing a PhD in mechanical engineering, so thats kind of a job?
Anyway, my Uncle does shit loads of hands on work fixing generators, and i'm not talking little ones, i'm talking 16 cylinder diesels. I always quite fancied getting my hands dirty doing that. Another uncle works as head engineer aboard a survey ship all about the world. Neither have any qualifications and have got where they are through learning on the job and by reputation.
If you want to become a mechanic, go for it.
Or you could go to uni and top up to a degree. At your age you'd be a mature student so no formal entry requirements, or you could try and skip onto the second year of another degree (electrical engineering? computer science? physics?)

I've got a degree in mechanical engineering and do low level sales jobs. I'd like to break into technical sales or it support. I think the kind of people who do mechanical engineering, think analytically, so can turn their hand to problem solving in lots of areas. One example being, at one place I worked, the boss of my boss of my boss, had a degree in mechanical engineering. His problem was that he would often take flights to visit important clients. He didn't want the airline to lose his luggage yet again, so he would only take hand luggage. If he sat in his suit for the duration, it would get crumpled, and he would look shit for the very important clients. So what he would do was change into his pyjamas just after getting onto the plane, and hang his suit up. He wouldn't care how he looked to anyone else on the plane.

I have a degree in Mechanical engineering and I'm due to start as a design/development graduate engineer with Jaguar Land Rover, so fairly applied. development can often be quite hands on with prototyping and experimentation to verify designs.

I thought you were working at Triumph?

Anyway, Mechanical engineering although a traditional skill is pretty useless these day's without a good knowledge of technology. Either learn something like Solidworks, or something like Matlab or you'll find things hard to apply to industry.

Learn C++ if your a hardcore motherfucker like some people Wink

Marine engineer Cool currently working on a gas carrier for Nakilat. Good money, very hands on, plenty of leave.

Main downside is the fact you're away for long periods.

I've got a first in Mechanical Design (I started the course when I was a year older than you are now) and now I work in F1. The work is interesting, the pay is alright and the kudos level is reasonably high. The only downside is the unpredictability of the level of job security. With the FIA banning systems and materials and capping staff levels on a whim no one can rest on their laurels for too long.

Maybe. It's one of the few teams I would consider a move to.

I'm a mech engineer on battleships and other MOD shit.
I've built supacat jackals and refits on various battleships. Oh, and subs. but they;re fucking awful.

I started that at 18, now qualified at 22 on a paid apprenticeship.

Love the No Smoking sign! When I was working on a jetty down at Grain there was a ship that came in sometimes that had NO SMOKING painted in twenty-foot-tall letters right across the bridge. You could literally see it a mile away.

I have gotta say I'm impressed with the level of replies, wasnt expecting much. Wouldn't mind mechanical development if it was for a lot of hands on or R & D.

Chris's jobs sounds the most fun on here so far. No offence to matt working for the MOD on battleships, I can see the picture.

Marine engineer sounds good also plus F1 but where do people hear or see these jobs/vacannices?

The most annoying bit when looking for work is the constant bit that says 'experience is required' and the exact qualification!
grr!

Went down to 5 job agencies and they had fuck all!
