As some might have noticed, me and 2 others did a lands end to john o'groats ride in a day because we fancied giving it a go and we raised over a grand for charity in the process.

So, to keep it going we've decided on a trip to Germany next July on the same basis. 'end to end, one day'
It's 620 miles from London to a place called End in Germany and wondered if any others fancied giving it a go as well.

The ride is mainly for ourselves, bit of a trip, small challenge and gives something back to the charities while we have a bit of a jolly.

Date will probably be sat 14th July

This sounds excellent. I would definately be interested.

I'm going to ask for the shifts off around that date (if it doesnt happen I'll do something else but I have to book my shifts off early).

I've been looking into doing long distance stuff like the IronButt UK rides, but doing it with a charity in mind sounds great.

There are so far 5 of us planning on going.

Once confirmed we'll be going. No bad weather dropping out, 'bit too windy for me' type bottling.

The lands end to john o'groats started in pissing rain and ended in pissing rain and about 75% of everything in between was pissing rain.
plus, it rained a bit, had a lot of fog in the highlands, windy roads but managed to survive.
The germany 2012 trip will be better roads and hopefully better weather

The charities we chose were Wiltshire air ambulance, NSPCC and British Heart Foundation.

All uk based and worthy charities that any one of us or our children could use the services of at any point

Excellent. They are some admirable charities.

Also, I have no problems riding in crap weather.

Also also, I'm on a Tiger 1050 and get 200 mile average tank, so no stopping every 10 mins. Thumbs Up

Plus you have nowhere to travel to the starting point.
Others are coming from south wales, nottingham, milton keynes, salisbury and oop norf somewhere.

Hoping we get a decent size group wanting to go.

We stayed at JoG the night and left in the morning, we all regret not staying and going to Orkney for the day so this one we're planning on staying in germany at least one day.

I'll probably camp but will look into info on hotels and b&b places in the area for anyone who wants it.

I maybe be able to make this trip and riding in wet conditions doesn't bother me Cool . However, I do have a few questions.

1) I will be riding a Honda CB500, will this be a sufficient machine for the task?

2) What equipment do I need. I am absolutely clueless and have no idea what to take.

3) If I am going to go as far as Germany, would anyone be interested in coming the long way home on a route that that would get as many countries in as poss and would look something like this... From End, Germany - Prague, Czech Republic - Vienna, Austria - Milan, Italy - Luasanne, Switzerland - and then back through France to the ferry at Calais? (this would be a round trip of 2300miles)....... something like this

4) I phoned up my insurance earlier to check if I am covered to ride in these countries and I am Smile Would there be any other legal requirements that I need to be aware of?

I'm game.
It's the sort of thing I was going to do anyway.

Anything from a 400cc+ would be fine.
Last year it was just the 3 of us on pans, in the UK pissing rain and 850 miles ish.
This year, in Euroland so no traffic problems, 80mph+ speed limits and people that know why there are 3 lanes on the motorway.
Speed limits will be roughly stuck to, no extreme speeding like over here as having fines demanded on the spot or bikes being impounded wouldn't make it a great day out

627 miles will be a piece of cake and expecting after a steady ride we'll be there during daylight hours and probably by 8pm.

Kit, well, what i'll be taking (which is always too much)
A tent
sleeping bag
Bivi bag
Roll mat
2 gas stoves and gas
Camping pan set, metal mug
3-in-1 coffee
fire lighting stuff
tubeless puncture kit
slime & tyre foam
compressor
fuses, wire and electrical connections
Bulbs set
front wheel bearings
starter relay
small socket set, pliers, screwdriver and bits
first aid kit

Digital Camera
Go pro

Netbook
inverter
foreign adaptor
phone and scala chargers

clothes for 3 days (will wash stuff while away)
trainers

Legals.
I take a folder containing all my docs, V5/logbook, mot, insurances, breakdown docs, passport
Licence lives in wallet

Breath tester legal requirement in France as from 1st July. Must be NF approved type
Helmet should have reflectives on all sides.
Hi vis up to you but i'll wear one, gives false air of respectability

Breakdown cover is down to you, get some. ADAC is great for european use, covers all countries (inc UK) and costs 77 euros for the year.
They are a german company but do have english speaking staff if you phone them to join.

Be aware though that if you do break down on the motorway you will be recovered by the local agent and will have to pay 105-120 euros.
This you can usually claim back from your breakdown company afterwards.

Still on. rain or shine.

Another thing I always make sure of is that you have enough tread to last the distance.

Although tyres are readily available it'll take time to sort, be a pain and cost more while away

Awesome! my tyres should be alright treadwise (i'll check that)

just need to sort my bike out, pack some stuff, budget for petrol etc

Also met up with Lincolnshire blood bikers today and put myself forward as a future rider would it be ok if i did my own sponsorship going solely to them?

Of course.

It's a jolly/rideout 1st

If anyone raises any cash for charity it's a bonus for them but not required but if anyone does raise money we'd prefer it if you did it using a virgin giving page, they seem to give a bigger % to the charity and then nobody can sideline any of the £ to pay for their jolly

Just a random thought... would it be worth Radio Comms for the trip?

Possibly up for this.
Don't you think that list is a bit OTT for a few days though? I just brought docs, tools, tent and a few spare clothes to go from plymouth to the nurburgring, amsterdam then back.

I'd want to swing by the nurburgring again though, as I didn't get a chance to ride it last time.

My list is just what I take sometimes.

Not suggesting anyone take anything other than what they feel they need but would say that a plugging kit, breakdown cover, phone and charger are a must along side the legally required bits and pieces.

Usually I carry nowhere near that amount of stuff when i do Amsterdam jobs because I deliver, turn around and go home but spending a few days away i might as well make the most of it

Hi Marm,

I'm definitely up for this trip, I have sorted out the domestic side here and all I need to do now is figure out my packing list, buy the bits needed and sort out the legal stuff.

I am really looking forward to the long way home I mentioned above, so are you definitely up for that route?

I think my tyres are good, but how would I know they are in good enough shape for a pre-ride tour? Is there a sort of '1mm lost every 1000 miles' type conundrum?

Not sure where to start, but I think I'll begin with looking for a tent.
