Just bought a cage for the work run. Its got no tax, which im getting tomorrow to start on the 1st August.

Now if the tax starts 1st of August, and im insured, MOT'd etc, can it legally be driven on the road? It'll be 4 days before the tax is valid to start.

Is there like a 5 day leway or something?

Hi

Legally there is no leeway.

There is a 5 day allowance for getting your tax disk online but it only applies if you have ordered the new tax disk before the end of the month the previous one expired in.

That said I would just order it online and use the car.

All the best

Keith

you cant get a tax disc in advance for a car that is currently untaxed. Earliest you will be able to get the disc is 1st August unless you want tax to run from 1st July.

As above really, you shouldn't drive on the road with it until 1st August. A bit of a silly rule really because it's obvious you bought the tax!

The only way to get around it is to tax it starting the same day, but you'll lose a month's tax on it, sadly.

I'd be inclined to deny the DVLA the extra revenue and start from 1st. Razz

Hi

Think I slightly misread your question. If I had ordered the tax to start on the 1st August I wouldn't use it on the road until the 1st August. But I also wouldn't be that worried about waiting until after that for a posted one to arrive.

All the best

Keith

Done some more checking.

I can get car tax tomorrow, to start on the 1st of August (2 working days before). But cannot drive the car on the road until Monday.

Basically, cars parked off the road put still in a private drive with some miserable badgers around. Dont want to give them the opportunity to whinge about it so want a physical tax disc in the car.

Not worried that I can't drive till monday, but would have been handy. No biggy though.

Unless the V5c has returned the tax disc would go to the previous owners address. Wink

Drive it and why even worry. Its not like theres writing on the tax disc saying it'll start in 2 days time. It'll just show it'll expire in 6/12 months.

If you get pulled just say you've recently taxed it and you'll more than likely get away with it as a copper really ain't gonna think that its not taxed already unless he's being very anal.

Err yes I have, however even if you buy tax from the Post Office or even online it doesn't show up for atleast a few days. So if you have a tax disc in the window and say its just been taxed the Police won't give a shit and move you on. Plus driving without tax is a civil matter, so aslong as you've got an MOT and Insurance all they can do is report you, so just play dumb if it ever comes up saying you didn't realise?

Hell according to ANPR I was driving around in a car that didn't exist for over 6 weeks thanks to the DVLA doing things so slowly.
