Hi
4k is way too low. Is the bike restricted of full power? If restricted then I suspect something around 8k is as far as it is worth revving it, while if full power rev it to the red line.
However think the red line is at 10k not 13k (2 strokes tend not to be as high revving as 4 strokes).
Revving a 2 stroke beyond peak power is often very pointless as power normally drops away very rapidly.
All the best

Hi
Ignore where the red line goes to. It is where it starts that is important. Basically the start of the red line is where it it safe to rev on a regular basis. The odd trip a bit into the red is unlikely to do much harm.
Only knowledge of the restrictions is of the older ones (decade+ older than yours) when some of it was in the power valve setup.
All the best

A 2 stroke engine is designed to work a quite a specific engine speed, go below or above that range by much and it won't be so sweet. The KIPS valve is an attempt to compensate for this, but in truth the bike needs to have the valve open to really be happy.
I had a 250 2 stroke where the rev counter only STARTED at 3k, so 4k is where you'd want to be changing gear if you were buying petrol by selling your organs. Change at about 6-7k when riding normally, higher when you actually want to get somewhere |

Hi fella.
You're changing up early, which is understandable as you're used to riding your four-stroke 125 which is a different animal to the KMX.
The four stoke 125's are more flexible to ride, despite not making as much power as the de-restricted two-strokes.
The KMX's, especially the 125, might feel a bit flat like you say until 6k. Above 6k is where you need to keep it when you want to get a move on. ____________________ 1988 Kawasaki KMX 200

The powervalve only opened on my NSR from 7500 rpm.
Take the bike by the bars and rev that mama You need to rev a 2 stroke to keep the engine in the powerband and to stop the plug getting gummed up with unburnt fuel / oil.
By changing up at 4 - 6 rpm you are getting as much power as a wet kipper and not allowing the engine to work as it should.
Take it easy until warm then use up to 10k, it'll be a much more enjoyable ride. ____________________ Current ride - Yamaha MT-07 |

Your old 125 was even slower, I would guess, because you were changing up too early on that.
The red line is generally a reasonable indication of where to change up on most bikes .
Some it may be a little before, but usually not much in my experience. |
