Sorry about the vague title, but my little comet ran dry once or twice, it started cutting out so bad on the way home from work that I had to call the RAC to help me get home. The mechanic said i needed to clean the fuel line, but didn't tell me how to do that.

I am trying to find out if the comet has an inline fuel filter or an in tank(?) one, and how to take it out and clear it. It's got so bad now that the bike wont even start. I'm gutted cause I can't go and enjoy the cracking weather right now.

Any help, links, diagrams, or videos or guides would be appreciated.

PS, it's a '05 model

Could it be the fuel pump not working?

It is extremely rare for a fuel tap to get blocked enough to not run, unless you've been pouring sand into your tank. Far more likely for small particles that won't get caught in the filter to block a small jet in the carb.

More likely still is that it just takes a long while to prime the system after running it dry, assuming your tank was nearly empty and you hadn't switched to reserve. Some bikes with vacuum fuel taps will pretty much drain the battery before fuel has worked its way down the line to the carb again.

Also possible that you have an electrical fault. A knackered reg/rec, leading to a battery that isn't being charged, feels very much like running out of fuel. This can be hard to diagnose, or at least to believe the diagnosis, because a healthy battery will regain a good bit of charge when left for half an hour. This means that the light will come on and it will turn over a few times, but not have enough juice to fire up.

Have a look around posts to find the method to test if your battery is charging, using a multimeter. You'll probably find it in a post about CBR600 or VFR400 reg/rec failure.

Well, to give you more information.

When it started cutting out (when I applied throttle), It was cutting out of reserve as well. The bike starts just fine, but as soon as I open the throttle even a little, it just dies.

Even when idling the engine sounds uneven, if that's the right word for it. as if it's struggling to run.

Could an electrical fault do that?

Its more likely to be crap blocking a main jet in the carbs.
This would allow the bike to idle (on one cylinder) but cut out as soon as you rev or try to ride it due to not having enough power, its happened to me before.

Also check the carbs are correctly balanced while your there...

Their is a gauze like filter stick on the pipe attachment at the bottom of the tank (see pic)

but doubt that is blocked, and my GTR has a filter near the battery area,
but again its rare for that to be too blocked, and probably wouldnt let you even fire up if it was that blocked!

My first area to check would be the carbs, although they are abit of a PITA to get to and mess with

This pic may help with fuel line setup
