does insurance cover you outside the UK? or is it only in the EU?

Will depend entirely on your insurer and policy details.

Some may charge for a green card to cover outside the UK but within the EU, some may not. Some may charge you for a green card for outside of EU, some may not.

Best bet is to ring your insurer and ask them.

IIRC it's EU law that any motor insurance policy issued within the EU also provides the legal minimum cover in all other EU countries. Have a look at your policy documents.
