How useful are the carbon knuckle protectors on the back of the hands and fingers? Obviously they are so your hands don't get squished, but I can't imagine many situations where these would come into play.

Also what are the wrist protectors for? I noticed most motocross gloves don't have these, why? What's the difference between motocross gloves and road gloves?

Can anyone recommend me some gloves for around £40? Waterproof would be nice.

Thanks Thumbs Up

Act as knuckle dusters if you get in a scuffle? Help you punch through a car window when the knobs scream up to a crossing at 60mph causing you to swerve into oncoming traffic as happens pretty much every other day?

When you crash a bike, you tend to roll once on the deck and this causes your arms to flail wildy around. When this happens your knuckles invariably take the impact, and it is usually a hard impact. After crashing a few times wearing decent gloves I'd always choose ones with knuckle protectors for this reason.

How precise do you need to be able to control a bike when offroad and how hot do you get with all that exercise. Light gloves.

I reckon that most spills involve hands-down at some point so some makers use different leathers and kevlar for the fingers and palm. The hard outer protection (if sewn/glued) with a sponge backing will help. Hard protection without any padding...waste of time. It's the resistance to abrasion and a cushioning effect to reduce damage that helps.

Gloves £40 waterproof?
Haven't a clue. Neutral

Motocross gloves are shorter because you don't need the extra baggage. If you do crash then its usually on the spot. If you do slide you aren't going to go that far and if you do you will be rolling.

So you don't need the protection on your wrists.

They are thin and not very protective as mud won't shred them to bits unlike tarmac so they still offer protection from cuts and stuff but light enough to handle controls which is very precise sometimes as others have mentioned.

Road gloves on the other hand need to be longer as the wrist bit covers well, your wrist Laughing Sometimes jackets slide up in crashes and if you didn't have that bit then you would be grinding through bone very quickly as the wrist bone is only protected by skin by the feel of it.

Never understood knuckle protection but MarJay's theory seems very reasonable. I like gloves with protected knuckles cos they look cool though Laughing

Waterproof gloves for £40? My gloves are honestly the best gloves I could ask for at the moment. They are waterproof but rarely sweaty. Rarely too hot or cold. Look good, knuckle protection and I think they are either £40 or £50 from J&S. Don't think they will be that good in a crash as it seems to be more of a chamois leather than a rugged cow hide or something. Think they are called the IXS Bristol.

I only ever ride in summer gloves ( short length wrists ) the current ones are Richa somethingorother, carbon knuckles, extra padding in the wrists and palm...

I just cannot get comfortable in longer ( gauntlet ) type gloves, they annoy the shit out of me...

If you can afford it get something with scaphoid protection (Knox brand it as SPS - Scaphoid Protection System).

When you come off your bike, you instinctively put your hands out. The bottom of your palm hits first, and the base of your thumb is where you'll find your scaphoid. If you break that, you're fucked. A lot of gloves don't give you enough protection in that area.

You may be hard pressed to find scaphoid protection for £40, but hey - it's your hands. What price?

If I had been wearing gloves with knuckle-protectors I wouldn't have ended up dislocating a finger and eventually losing a ligament from it.

Along with the usual "stop you from fkin your hands up" stuff, they also help your hands warm when its cold.
