After much fucking about I finally got my act together and went for an assesment today to make a plan for how much I needed to do for my DAS

Spent an hour pottering about on a brand new Yamaha XJ6 which was so awesome stepping up from a YBR125 - 77BHP that I used almost none of, brakes that work, more stable, just great to ride

Went back and because I wanted to get on with it they managed to fit me in to 4 hours of practice on Sunday on a hired DVLA test ground to do MOD1 practice, on the condition I made my own way there and the instructor went on an XJ6 for me to borrow once I arrived.

Then MOD1 booked for 4th August, 3 hours on road practice first then straight into it.

Plan then is a MOD2 asap with an afternoon test slot so a morning practice and hopefully I'll be done in a month barring any mishaps.

Really looking forward to it now. If i'm super confident after Sunday I'll get my MOD2 booked as close to my MOD1 as possible, the instructor seemed to think I was doing fine.

Really helpful chap too. Couldn't be more impressed with today actually. Metropolis in Vauxhall are a really friendly helpful set of guys Very Happy

I'll update the thread with progress.

Nice one mate!

Best of luck for it. The worst part of my DAS was waiting the 7 days between passing Mod 1 and getting a Mod 2 slot... was a killer, just wanted it over with!

Have fun on the XJ ! They came highly recommended from my instructor... he loved them and he claims to have ridden a great deal of bikes!

Have fun! Thumbs Up Very Happy

I said I'd keep this updated,

I went off to a rented actual examination centre today for some Mod 1 practice.

Watched the instructor do it first giving a commentary on the radio and then had a go first on my YBR125. That was fine and I would have passed first time (52/51 on the speed trap) because I followed advice from here to carry some speed through the big corner and just pin it in 2nd.

Then I got to have a few goes on the XJ6 and I followed the same advice. I would have passed but the examiner said while there wasn't strictly a maximum allowable speed through the trap, it was probably best to keep it under 60 in future Very Happy

I was pretty confident I'd be fine to do it, but I do think it was helpful to do the actual course at an actual centre just ot make it completely clear in your mind what you have to do, I think that it will be a lot of help when you have to do it 'for real'

Also, I really really want a bigger bike now having ridden that, I'm seriously considering one of those xj6's with the full fairing. there are some awesome offers on them at the moment, I have found them with a grand off list price and 3 years interest free credit.

I also think the faired version looks pretty sexy, I like the riding position and it's plenty quick enough for me.

Always been a fan of the XJ6....think they look nice in streetfighter mode too, but obvious problem there is less wind protection. Good luck with it all mate, now you've done the Mod1 circuit, and seen exactly what it is like, you should be fine with that. Bare in mind that you are allowed as low as 48 (IIRC) on the high speed exercises as new rules will only give you a minor......so no need to completely pin it! Laughing

Yeah I like the streetfighter version also (that's what I'm learning on) but I want to do some miles as well as go round town so I want the wind protection like you say.

Got carried away and went and booked Mod2 today. Full days training on the 11th August followed by test 10am on the 12th. Lets hope I don't cock Mod1 up now.

Gulp.

Very Happy

I liked the XJ6 Diversion F too (the fully faired one) but then the ER-6f is a very similar bike and £1500 cheaper.... which sold me on it!!

Good luck on your test though, there is nothing like it!! Smile

Update

Went out today in the total pissing rain to do my MOD1

Passed! No minor faults, 59 on Emergency stop, 55 on swerve.

After giving me my certificate the examiner said it was nice to test someone who was confident for once and that he'd tested a load of people moaning about the rain all day, and failing them for being unable to deal with it. That was nice confidence boost.

MOD2 next Friday. Gulp!

Good result Thumbs Up

For me, it was the MOD 1 that I was worried about, I was nervous about it - more so than the MOD 2. After hearing the words "...I'm pleased to say that you've passed" and getting my certificate I felt confident that the MOD 2 was going to go smoothly.

Good luck with it, try and stay calm and just enjoy the ride - and as you've probably heard a hundred times, Ob's, Ob's, Ob's!

Congratulations on the result for your Mod 1

For the mod 2 I would suggest that you don't think about it you know what to do just get out there and do it. Another piece of advice would be to make it more obvious if you do a mirror check or any other observation Thumbs Up

Well done Thumbs Up

Good luck with mod 2, just think of it as a normal ride, between now and then... ride like you are on a test.
You'll feel natural at checking mirrors and shoulders during the test, remember to cancel indicators/no wheelies etc Laughing

Hope you do well mate Thumbs Up

Congrats.

If you don't mind me asking, which school / company was it that allow you to train on a proper DSA test ground?

That sounds like really good practice, I'd be interested in doing the same thing (only passed theory yesterday so yet to book DAS training).

Metropolis in Vauxhall, very professional, good instructors (I had 3 different ones over the course of all this, all excellent) and nice modern bikes to use.

I'd definitely recommend them.

Nice one.

Is this them?
https://www.metropolismotorcycles.com

Their website doesn't say very much about the training and I couldn't see any prices. The quotes I've gathered so far were based on 4 days as follows:

Day 1 - Mod 1 training
Day 2 - Mod 1 prep + test
<gap, maybe a week or two>
Day 3 - Mod 2 training
Day 4 - Mod 2 prep + test

Is that similar to what you did? If so could you maybe PM me with what they roughly charge?

If it's not similar then no worries, I'll phone them up and get a proper quote.

I noticed earlier in the thread you mentioned somewhere that is doing XJ6's for a grand less and 3 years 0% finance? Would mind linking me? I'm in the market for a new XJ.

https://www.onyerbike.net/used.php?make=63&id=2506

It's the XJ6 Diversion ABS that I was looking at.

List is £6,999 they are doing it for £5,999.

£1,500 down (25%) and the rest 0% over 3 years.

That's them

You should give them a ring, or even better go in and see them.

They do a free assessment, which I did, where an instructor takes you on the back of an XJ6 to a nearby carpark and talks about your experience and lets you have a go for about 30 minutes and then you can go back and work out a plan depending on what they think you need.

I'm sure they will just give you a price but I think working out a schedule that fits in with what you and is spaced out as you want it is the best thing.

I don't think they are the very cheapest, but the plan we worked out was reasonable and I was confident and passed both parts first time.

Chris who runs the whole training section is a brilliant guy, If you are going I'll PM you my name and you can say I was really pleased with my course and sent you along to speak to him!
