Alternatives to a Triumph Speed Four?

Hi all,

So I'm after bike and have a budget of around £2.5k. I'd quite like a Speed Four, but they're just so rare that I can't seem to find many close to me, and don't want to be trudging round the country looking for one. The insurance on all the sports 600's is a bit too pricey, I was wondering if there are any alternatives in that price range I could be looking at?

Oh, and I don't want a CBF/Hornet, as the models available in this price range I really don't like the looks on them.

Kawasaki Z750?
Yamaha Fazer 6/ FZ6?

The Hornet's a cracking bike, shame you've ruled it out.

Suzuki GSR600 down to that money yet?

I humbly agree. But you wont get a Street Triple for 2.5k.

If I was you, I'd wait for a speed four. Such a cracking bike and so underrated. And as Chris said, everything else is just a compromise.

I reckon in winter some very early Daytonas will be around that sort of money. Strip the fairings off and fit some high bars. Then you'll still have proper brakes and power too. None of this retuned for more midrange nonsense.

Or even a B1H and high high bars. Now THAT'S a naked bike. Laughing

There's a couple of bargain S4s on ebay at the moment I noticed yesterday, £2k-£2.5k mark.

I made the fatal mistake of buying one and then a couple of weeks later looking at whats about again Mad

Probably could have paid less for mine but it was local and I could actually go and see it first and have some recourse if anything happened.

Controversial. I had a long test ride on the R with the goodies pack fitted, so can only compare it to that.

As far as I know the engine in the R and standard are the same. And that engine is a peach, and grudgingly better than the four. Although the Four has better adjustable suspension and much bigger and better brakes over the standard Street Triple.

At first I was a little shocked by your statement, but after doing a little specs top trumps I can see where you're coming from. I'd have to ride the standard triple to be sure though.

Just make sure its the testosterone fuelled 4 cylinder Daytona 1200, not the three cylinder kiddibike alloy framed effeminate gaymobile.

I haven't ridden a tt600 But have been told by many people that S4 engine is much better, more refined with a better mid range and less lumpy low down. The Speed Four's brakes and suspension will piss all over the budget stuff on the non R, also bear in mind that S4 chassis is known for being one of the best handling super-sports Chassis.

I do indeed! Laughing and I've already mailed him asking about the bike, but it has been dropped so has some damage.

Since this morning I have actually had a conversation with my previous insurer, and found out my NCB is still valid! So will be going back to my original idea of a 05-06 ZX6R and upping my budget a grand in the proces.. Because I always end up doing that ... Rolling Eyes

So what if it has damage Laughing Most bikes are subject to it every now and then.

If you are looking down the sports bike section with your NCB, take a gander at GSXR750's... the insurance might convince you Wink

I looked into a GSXR750, as the insurance is cheaper than the 600s! But I don't like the looks of the front of them unfortunately.

S4 is the 600 naked to have of that vintage IMO. Hold their value well for that reason.

However, you can get a late model 955i Daytona for £2500. Not a real competitor for the IL4 superbikes, but if you like Triumph, they're a far better bike than the S4/Daytona 600/650 range. Would be my choice over an old 600 naked any day. Excellent condition carbed Fireblades and ZX-9Rs can be had for similar money and are also much more capable than the S4 at pretty much everything.

Street Triple is a much better bike though, and indicative of Triumph really coming of age in industry leading design.

Skip the TT600 and get a Daytona 600 then. New FI, comfy and sporty, cheap on insurance for some people... I loved mine Smile

Quite a bit more expensive than a tt600, although I've not tired a daytona 600, so dont know whether it's worth the extra or not.
