I just watched a video of someone on the Isle of Man TT coming around a corner, with the bike then starting to jerk from left to right, which gradually got worse untill he fell off the side. This is supposed to be a tankslapper?

I didn't see him slap his tank.... purposefully, or accidentally... I don't understand!....

Talking about tanks, are tank protectors a good idea? My tank's some kind of plastic on the outside... Embarassed So, not sure if I should.. invest in one.

Thanks Thumbs Up

Hi

Tank slapper is where the handle bars shake violently from lock to lock.

A tank protector is there to protect the back of the tank from scratches from the zip on your jacket (and the like).

All the best

Keith

Oh, I understand now. Thankyou.

Why does it do that? Can't randomly happen at any time can it? Shocked

Thanks

No.

Modern bikes take a fair bit of persuasion to tankslapper. Landing a wheelie badly, hitting the wrong kind of bump with the bike decked over in a corner, that kind of thing.

If this is the video you mean, it is indeed a tank slapper :-

All things have a natural resonant frequency, and on a bike that is likely to mainly affect the tyres, forks, frame, etc. When all of these happen to resonate at the same time the effects can become cumulative (find a video of the Tachoma Narrows Bridge to see a good example of the effect), and thus very violent. So violent that they can throw you off the bike or dislocate your shoulder should you try and hang on. Lots of things can affect it, such as extra weight on the yokes (eg, fitting a handlebar fairing), holding on to the bars too tightly to hold yourself in position at speed, worn tyres, blown suspension seals, etc.

True tank slappers basically do not happen on modern bikes unless something is wrong (they might get a bit nervous and shake the bars a bit, but not really anything like a tank slapper), but go back 20 years and they would be quite easy to provoke on, say, an RD350LC.

All the best

Keith

Not really. They do stop the bars shaking, but they just mask the problem rather than fixing it so the bike is still likely to be highly unstable.

Medical equivalent would be taking a paracetamol to fix a brain tumour.

All the best

Hi

I had a problem with the Divvy shaking. Took ages to fix the problem. New steering head bearings (notchy), rebuilt shock (it went pop), fresh fork oil, top box on and off. Finally went to change the tyres and found a tiny bit of play in the front wheel bearings, and with the tyres and front wheel bearings replaced the shake disappeared.

All the best

Keith
