MTX 80 Help needed urgently please. Same engine as MBX?

Hi there myself and my girlfriend have recently acquired a MTX 80 1983-84 to use by ourselves and all the family.

The main problem ive got at the moment is that someone in the past has converted it to a field bike (exactly what we wish to use it as), but have made a major hack job of the wiring, have brought 2 different official honda manuals and havent been able to sort it out.

Basically im looking for a wiring diagram or any help I can get to sort it out. Hopefully by the knowledge many of you have of the MTX ans MBX engines ill be able to get some help.

I would have thought the best way to do it will be to only have the stator, cdi and coil wired up? Its a kickstart only engine so it shouldnt need to have rectifier, battery etc should it?

This is your lucky day!!

I loved my MBX80 ... and just dug the manual out!! Thinking about it, it is >20 years since it has been thumbed! Shocked

Anyway, it had a photocopy of the wiring digram in the back, I have taken some pics of the relevant parts! ... enjoy!

You sir are a massive ledgend, ill try and work off this. If not would it be possible for you to get a scanned copy for me so that i can print it out and then take it to tescos and have it blown up to A3 size etc etc.

Hi buddy, attemted it off of the photos but cant quite see all of the details ie wire colours etc. You rekon you could do me a scanned copy of it? Or photocopy it and post it?

To be fair, you are not going to see much more with a scan/copy!! Very Happy

Right ...

CDI = Bl/W (Black/White) + Bu/Y (Blue/Yellow) + Bl/R (Black/Red) + Bl/Y (Black/Yellow) + G (Green)

Alternator = Bu/Y (Blue/Yellow) + G (Green) + W (White) + Y (Yellow)


To make it run, you want to connect the Blue/Yellow from Alternator to the CDI Blue/Yellow. You also want to connect the Black/Red from Alternator to the CDI Black/Red. The Black/Yellow from the CDI needs to go out to the coil. Finally both the Green on the Alternator and CDI to earth.

The alternator White and Yellow outputs are power to lighting circuit + reg/rec ... you don't need to connect these up if a field bike.

To stop the bike (other than stalling) you need to short the CDI Black/White to earth - via a switch preferably!! Very Happy i.e. leave the circuit 'open' and the bike will run, short it out and it will stop.

In summery, you need to connect 2 wires from the alternator to the CDI, the CDI to the coil via the Black/Yellow to power that and then earth out your greens and you are running!! Cool

You sir are a ledgend, ill get on with it tommorrow and let you know how it goes, so any wires coloured oter than the ones youve stated are junk?

Yep ... well there is a neutral light (Lg/R (Light Green/Red)) wire that comes from the alternator area, but you don't really need to connect that up! Smile
